A utopian experiment that became the Brentwood neighborhood
If you had a chance to live in utopia, wouldn’t you take it? That’s what one group had in mind when they purchased a parcel of land on Long Island in the mid-1800s. In the lead-up to and during the Civil War, the nonconforming idealists called the commune Modern Times. For the day, and even for today to some extent, their beliefs were extremely progressive. Before the community dissolved, its members changed the town’s name to Brentwood. Villagers strategized that a more conventional moniker may endear the group to outsiders, and maybe even launch their ideas into the mainstream. But if this is the first time you’re hearing about Modern Times, then you know how that strategy panned out.
Ranch-style homes at "modest" prices
Members of Modern Times didn’t believe in using currency. These days, house hunters in Brentwood need greenbacks, though not as much as in other Long Island neighborhoods. “Typical of mid-island residential real estate, homes in this neighborhood are modest and modestly priced,” says Todd Yovino, a licensed real estate broker and owner at Island Advantage Realty. Mostly, you’ll find ranch-style and hi-ranch houses with prices ranging from $500,000 to $600,000. Brentwood is landlocked — unlike neighborhoods on the south and north shores — and there are no lakes or canals. While there are a few large parks, including Brentwood State Park and Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve, both are on the east side of the community. Houses on the perimeter of these green spaces do not sell at a premium. In other words, no matter where you live in Brentwood, housing prices, on average, are essentially the same.
Modern Times’ legacy lives on in Brentwood’s classrooms
There are numerous public and private schools in Brentwood. And all of the public schools in the neighborhood are part of the Brentwood Union Free School District. One of the best schools in the community, North Elementary School, got a perfect score from GreatSchools for student progress. The website, which collects and tracks schools’ progress, says that students who started the school year with low scores did a great job in terms of academic growth. Northeast Elementary School isn’t doing so bad, either. It scored a seven out of 10 for student progress. Teachers at Pine Park Elementary School earned an A+ from Niche. Brentwood High School, which is across the street from the original utopian village and shares its campus with Modern Times’ 1850s-era one-room schoolhouse, scored straight Bs from Niche in categories including teacher performance and clubs and activities.
Future podcasters get practice at Brentwood Public Library
Brentwood Public Library is a great place to take kids who have too much time on their hands. The library produces a podcast, available on all major platforms, hosted by a rotating roster of Brentwood teens. The kids choose what they want to discuss, which is very much a legacy of the town’s original utopian mission.
Dinners at breweries and steakhouses, groceries at Food Bazaar
Brentwood is predominantly residential, but don’t rule out getting good food and having fun. Great South Bay Brewery has a tasting room, pizza kitchen, full swing golf simulator and hosts poker tournaments and live music performances. On weekdays, they have a 50%-off all food and draft beer lunch special. If you’re looking for a sit-down dining experience, check out Tango Argentinian Steakhouse, known for generous portions, its red sangria and grilled meat dishes. Rather cook at home? There’s a Food Bazaar supermarket on Wicks Road.
Parking and then taking the Long Island Rail Road to Manhattan
For Brentwood residents who work in Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road Ronkonkoma Branch runs through the neighborhood. The parking lot has nearly 800 spots, and the first two hours are free. It takes just over 60 minutes to commute to Penn Station.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.

Business is good here. Not all stores go out of business and if one does, then a new business develops.

There are homeless people abd illegal immigrants everywhere. Terrible restraints and supermarkets. Drug deals abd suspicious people flood the streets at night.

Brentwood has its potential to be a good town but its current gang problem causes people to be worried and afraid.
