Centereach

Homes built from the 1980s onward
“Unlike the postwar bungalows found along Long Island’s North Shore, Postmodern and colonial revival homes are more common here,” says Goldenberg. “The area really started being built up in the 1980s.” Mid-size wide-line Hi-Ranches range from $450,000 to $650,000. Comparable homes in close-by Nesconset sell for at least $100,000 more, though they sit on slightly larger properties. Quarter to third acre lots are more common in Centereach. Larger colonial revival homes sell for between $600,000 and $1.2 million, depending on size. A few unbuilt half-acre lots hover around the $150,000 mark. There’s more stock here than in other parts of central Long Island.Three top-ranked school districts
“As with much of central Long Island, homebuyers tend to search for homes based on school districts,” says Goldenberg. Young residents can attend schools in three different districts depending on where they live within the neighborhood: Three Village Central, Sachem and Middle Country Central, for which Centereach hosts most of its schools. While Hawkins Path Elementary School covers grades K to 5 and maintains an overall A-minus from Niche, Dawnwood Middle has a B-score and a favorable 12 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Centereach High has a B-plus. 97% of its graduates earn a New York State Regent’s diploma.Long Island Expressway and railroad
Located within a stretch of commuter-friendly Long Island suburbs, Centereach is near the Long Island Expressway, which gets residents to New York City within two hours. The Long Island Rail Road Main Branch terminates in nearby Ronkonkoma, which has ample parking and serves as a transit hub for several surrounding areas. The trip to Manhattan’s Penn Station takes an hour and 20 minutes. The station is a 10 to 12-minute drive.Middle Country Road and the Smith Haven Mall
Middle Country Road is Centereach’s main commercial artery and has a number of fast food, fast casual and family-style eateries. According to Goldenberg, Istanbul Cafe has a cult following. Cabo Fresh is a popular Cal-Mex grill while Brownstone Café is the area’s go-to breakfast spot. A five-to-10-minute drive, Smith Haven Mall features over a hundred name-brand stores and sits in the center of a commercial area with even more food options. There’s also a Trader Joe’s supermarket. A Home Depot, Target and Best Buy can be found in a shopping mall located at the intersection of Nicolls Road and New York State Route 347.Centereach and Percy B Raynor Memorial parks
Green spaces are dotted throughout the neighborhood. Situated in the middle of dense woodlands, Percy B Raynor Memorial Park has sports fields and a dog run. Trails feed into the Laurel Ridge Setauket Woods Nature Preserve toward the north. Centereach Park has a public pool, playground, pickleball courts and baseball diamonds. Middle Country Public Library's main branch is located in Centereach. It's one of the best facilities of its kind on Long Island and features the educational Nature Explorium outdoor installation, which teaches children to appreciate nature. The library’s Museum Corner features rotating children’s exhibits exploring topics as varied as building hot air balloons and using straws to construct bridges, workshops held as part of the Easy Engineering program.
