Deer Park, a Long Island community known for its green spaces
One of the most famous personalities to come out of Deer Park was Rodney Dangerfield. The comedian was known for saying, “I’ll tell ya’, I get no respect!” It may leave you wondering if that’s how the funnyman felt growing up in a hamlet that never really had the same population boom that other Long Island communities experienced after World War II.
In a sense, Dangerfield wasn’t far off. South shore and north shore neighborhoods get a lot more respect than communities in the middle of the island. The south shore is known for its bay views and the north shore has vineyards and world-class golf courses. So, what does Deer Park have to offer? For one, it’s surrounded by parks and nature preserves on three corners, including Belmont Lake State Park, Strathmore Park and Edgewood Oak Brush Plains Preserve. Dangerfield’s onstage persona may have been a self-deprecating discontent, but, as you can see, that has nothing to do with Deer Park. So, give the neighborhood a little respect.
Walk and bike in greenspaces
These greenspaces give locals plenty of opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors in any way they desire, whether it's walking, jogging or biking on endless trailheads, bird watching, or even joining a softball league or pickup soccer game.
Single-family ranches and Tudor-style townhouses
The most common types of residential real estate in Deer Park are mid-century ranch-style houses, hi-ranches and split-levels. These run anywhere from $400,000 to $650,000. It took a while before this part of the Town of Babylon began seeing some new construction, but it has been trickling in over the past few years. Large, neo-colonial style houses go on the market starting at $750,000. If you’re looking for a deal, Tudor-style town house condos at Quail Run at Deer Park start at around $400,000.
Commuters use public transportation
Deer Park is not a large neighborhood. It measures roughly 6 square miles. So, no matter where you live, it’s not a far drive to Long Island Rail Road’s Deer Park station in Baywood. This depot has hundreds of no-fee parking spots. During morning rush hour, you can get to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan in just under 60 minutes. “One of the advantages of living in a neighborhood in central Long Island is that it’s so close to mass transit,” says Robert Bianco, office manager at Island Advantage Realty in Suffolk County. “You can shorten your daily commute by about 30 minutes a day, compared to neighborhoods to the north.”
Outlets and family-owned restaurants in Deer Park
Deer Park is also home to the Tanger Outlets. With movie theaters, Monster Mini Golf, plus numerous restaurants and, of course, tons of outlet stores, the mall is a popular weekend destination and a who’s who of the biggest national retailers, from Abercrombie & Fitch to Nike Factory Store and Polo Ralph Lauren.
When you want to get a bite to eat, there are more than a dozen restaurants at the mall or close by. Popei’s Clam Bar & Seafood House is a family-owned and operated restaurant that has been in the community since 1994. It’s located near the outlets, making it a convenient place to quench your thirst after a long, hard day fishing for retail deals. Their mussels, clams and steamers “Gone Wild” entree is pretty popular. Diners have the option of ordering one type of shellfish or any combination of the three.
If you want to do your own cooking, there’s a ShopRite supermarket on Deer Park Avenue. This is also where you’ll find fast food restaurants, dollar stores, car parts and repair shops and Olympic Diner. While the eatery has been feeding Long Islanders since 1980, the retro sign and vintage-style diner tables and chairs will make you feel like you woke up in the ‘50s.

It sucks here. People suck, weather sucks, jobs suck, extremely expensive, and smells like raw sewage and pot. Junkies will break into your car, people always driving like lunatics on deer park avenue, etc. Just an expensive, filthy, extremely overrated place to live.

There are a lot of houses, some are vacant. The reason for most vacant properties is the housing cost and taxes. Taxes on Long Island, in general, are some of the highest in the nation. Add to that the cost of utilities and you have many people that can't afford to even rent in the area.
