East Meadow

Midcentury suburban blocks and sprawling new construction in East Meadow
Evenly plotted suburban blocks lined with sidewalks and tidy landscaping make up much of East Meadow, supplying curb appeal to a blend of ranch-style, Minimal Traditional, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod style homes that were built in the 1940s through 1960s. With the exception of some fixer-uppers, most small midcentury homes sell for $550,000 to $990,000. Taller, gable-packed roofs, however, have increasingly towered over nearby starter homes in recent years. “There’s been a ton of rebuilding because the market is so high over there. All of Nassau County’s prices have been going up, but East Meadow has been going up very quickly in just the last few years,” says Andrew-Paul Ragusa, broker/owner of REMI Realty who has specialized in markets from Brooklyn to Suffolk County for a decade. “You have to be ready to buy. If there’s an open house on Saturday or Sunday, on Monday it’s sold.” The sprawling New Traditional homes that were built more recently, as well as highly renovated or expanded older homes, sell for $1 million to $1.5 million. Condos in townhouse and midrise complexes, some of which are age-restricted like The Seasons of East Meadow, sell for $410,000 to $800,000. East Meadow has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.Excellent musical education at East Meadow public schools
All of East Meadow Union Free School District’s schools earn an A or higher from Niche, but home address informs which K-12 pipeline students fall into. One possible progression is from McVey Elementary School to Woodland Middle School before finishing up at East Meadow High School. Among plenty of well-loved academic and extracurricular programs, the high school’s music offerings stand out. In recognition of the longstanding talents and amenities offered to orchestras, bands and choirs, the district has been recognized as a Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants 16 times over the years.Meadowbrook and Wantagh state parkways, the Nassau University Medical Center
While Nassau Inter-County Express buses make stops along a couple of major roads, personal vehicles and commuter highways are the main mode of transit in East Meadow. Both the Wantagh and Meadowbrook state parkways run north to south on either side of the hamlet, opening access to major east-west connectors like the Southern State Parkway and Long Island Expressway on the roughly 30-mile drive to Manhattan. Some commuters head about 4 miles away to the Bellmore Long Island Rail Road Station which offers a 50-minute train ride to Penn Station. While New York City is packed with commuter destinations, healthcare workers may only need to head to the Nassau University Medical Center complex that sprawls along Hempstead Turnpike. John F. Kennedy International Airport is about 15 miles away.Golfing, skating and cricket games at Eisenhower Park
Veterans Memorial Park becomes packed with swimmers and sunbathers through the summer months, and youth leagues can often be found playing on the baseball diamond, soccer fields and playground at Senator Speno Memorial Park. While these smaller green spaces do the trick, they pale in comparison to Eisenhower Park, a massive destination park that sprawls across more than 900 acres north of Hempstead Turnpike. “Eisenhower Park has so much to do – ice skating and hockey rinks, picnic areas – you name it and it’s there,” Ragusa says. Well-lit tennis courts and baseball diamonds join with accessible playground equipment, biking and walking trails and decorative landscaping to provide all the trappings of a classic community park, but the campus is also packed with less-common recreation facilities. The lane-marked and diving board-shadowed pool at the Nassau County Aquatic Center host races and competitions for local high schools, as well as free swims, lessons and fitness classes for members and leisure pass holders. Adults tee off across three 18-hole golf courses, while a couple of miniature golf courses cater to younger putters. For nearly two weeks in June 2024, a crowd of 35,000 fans roared as the International Cricket Council Men’s T20 World Cup played out in the park’s temporary stadium. While the grandstands have been dismantled, the cricket pitch remains open to amateur players.Shopping and dining on Hempstead Turnpike
Strip mall shopping plazas alternate with big box locations and fast-food restaurants along Hempstead Turnpike. Shoppers might pick up essentials at Walmart or the original Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace. Between larger footprints like Marshalls, Lidl and Stew Leonard’s, diners can find plenty of national chains like Moe’s Southwest Grill and Texas Roadhouse. On East Meadow Avenue, a sparser commercial district is populated by more local flavors, like the sesame seed-crusted pizza pies at Pietro’s where an umbrella-hung patio shades diners in the warmer months. Hearty dinner plates and wine menus are the draw to Majors Steakhouse just up the road. Roosevelt Field’s extensive shopping mall offerings are only about 4 miles away. Synagogues, churches and masjids hold services throughout the hamlet.Events at Eisenhower Park and the Nassau Coliseum
Eisenhower Park’s wide-open spaces make it a popular event venue, from Saturday morning farmers markets from July through October to free summer concerts and movies at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre. The East Meadow Chamber of Commerce is responsible for putting on more community-centric holiday events, including family friendly trunk-or-treats and Easter egg hunts at Veterans Memorial Park. Just west of East Meadow, the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum is one of the county’s most iconic event venues, drawing massive crowds to events from concerts to multi-day trade shows to fiery, engine-revving monster truck rallies.
