Major entertainment venues nestled in the suburbs

Not all neighborhoods are blessed with a claim to fame, and even fewer are blessed with two — but Elmont, located just 23 miles from Manhattan, is one of the lucky few. First opened in 1905, Belmont Park is the neighborhood’s original claim to fame. One of the world’s largest thoroughbred racecourses, it hosts the Belmont Stakes, which is the third leg of the prestigious Triple Crown races. “It’s one of the best well-known racetracks in the entire United States,” says Julie Calabrese, a licensed real estate salesperson at HomeSmart Premier Living Realty who has sold homes here for seven years. The track has ushered Elmont from farmland to suburban sprawl; even the streets around the park bear the names of famous racehorses, like Secretariat Avenue and Ruffian Road. The neighborhood’s second claim to fame, the UBS Arena, doesn’t have as much worldwide appeal, but it still has a gravity of its own that pulls people in. “UBS Arena is where the New York Islanders play. They also host concerts and other events there, which is fantastic,” Calabrese says, adding that the New York Islanders games are a big deal for locals. “The proximity is incredible.” The arena seats 17,250 and is nicknamed “The Stable” as a nod to its location right next to Belmont Park.

Outside of these major event venues, Elmont itself is a lively neighborhood where sidewalk and tree-lined residential streets occasionally give way to retail stores. “Elmont has a suburban feel, although it’s just over the city border,” says Ian Rubenstein, a licensed real estate salesperson at Redfin Real Estate. “It’s perfect for people who like to live in the suburbs but don’t want long commutes.”

Homes usually start at about $600,000

Most homes in the community were built between 1930 and 1969. Cape Cods are the most common style among these older homes, but ranch-style houses and hi-ranches are also common. New homes have also begun to spring up in the neighborhood, usually built in the new traditional style. “Elmont is a neighborhood in transition. It has become very popular, and houses don’t stay on the market long,” Rubenstein says. Although yards tend to be small, most homes have off-street parking. Small fixer-uppers can start at around $450,000, but most homes start at more like $600,000 and can climb as high as $900,000 if it’s been fully renovated. Bigger homes start at around $900,000, but renovated or new homes can reach as much as $1.5 million. The CAP Index crime score is 3 out of 10, which is lower than the national average of 4.

Major highways, LIRR to Manhattan

Cross Island Parkway runs right alongside Elmont and it takes just a couple of minutes to hop on the Southern State Parkway from the neighborhood. “The Cross Island will bring you into the city, and the Southern State runs across all of Long Island, so it’s a great location,” Calabrese says. From the Long Island Rail Road’s Elmont-UBS Arena Station, trains reach Manhattan’s Penn Station in about 45 minutes. Mercy Hospital and John F. Kennedy International Airport are both 6 miles away.

Soccer games at Dutch Broadway Park, entertainment at Belmont Park

Many of Elmont’s parks are little playgrounds tucked into small lots, but Dutch Broadway Park covers 13.8 acres. Its soccer fields often host local practices and games. Less than 3 miles away, Arthur J. Hendrickson Park offers basketball and tennis courts, a playground, a lake for fishing and an outdoor swimming pool during the summer. When the weather isn’t great, many locals head to Dani’s Strike Zone for an afternoon of bowling or surround themselves with books at the Elmont Memorial Library.

Improvements to Belmont Park bringing new jobs, revenue

Even when horse racing season has ended, Belmont Park is open — as it is year-round. Its impact on the neighborhood is significant. The grounds are beautifully landscaped, and admission is free until 1 pm. The popular Breakfast at Belmont program welcomes families to enjoy a breakfast buffet while watching the racehorses train. The old Bellmont Park building, which was last renovated in 1968, is currently being demolished and rebuilt. The project, which will cost $455 million, will also create thousands of construction-related jobs and, once completed, more full-time jobs and revenue at the racetrack itself. The project is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2026.

Dining and shopping on Hempstead Turnpike

Restaurants dot Hempstead Turnpike, Elmont Road and Meacham Avenue. King Umberto is one of the most popular of these restaurants. “It’s a really great Italian restaurant,” Calabrese says. “Their pizza is amazing. They have the Metro Pizza, which is delicious, their chicken parm is amazing. Their veal marsala is delicious, too.” Just down the road, Salvatore’s of Elmont Pizzeria & Restaurant is another popular Italian spot, Stop 20 Diner is a favorite breakfast spot and Kingston Grill is known for Jamaican dishes like curry goat. Nearby, Sapienza Bake Shop has made sweet treats like cannoli and cheesecake since 1978. There’s also plenty of shopping in the neighborhood, mostly along Hempstead Turnpike. Elmont Discount Department Store offers discount clothing, home goods and gifts not far from major retailers like Target, Marshalls, T.J. Maxx and Home Depot. Stop & Shop sells groceries just outside the neighborhood. “You don’t have to go far to meet your needs, basically,” Calabrese says.

New York Islanders games, concerts and library events

Aside from the horse races at Belmont Park, UBS Arena is a center for major events in the neighborhood, from New York Islanders games to concerts by major artists like Nicki Minaj and Seventeen. It even presents performances like Disney on Ice and the Cirque Du Soleil. For the day to day, though, the Elmont Memorial Library is the center of activity. It offers ongoing events like yoga, language classes and story time for the kids. The library’s 399-seat playhouse is dedicated to the preservation of musical theater. Each season, the library sponsors four Broadway musicals starring local artists and a live orchestra, which are open to the public. Its annual Original Musical Theater Summer Festival highlights shows created by local artists and playwrights.
