Down the Garden City Path
“Garden City is a quaint village on the western edge of Long Island’s Nassau County,” says Elizabeth Breslin, an agent with Howard Hanna of Coach Realtors. “It’s accessible to airports, the city, beaches and shopping, and it has a great sense of community.” Commuters can be in Midtown Manhattan in 35 minutes or fewer, which is a huge selling point. But once they arrive, residents put down roots in Garden City. Its parks and the summer pool complex foster connections, and village officials organize events throughout the year to bring people together. “I didn’t grow up here. I’m from Michigan originally, and it was easy to become established here and meet people,” Breslin adds.

Minutes from Long Island’s Largest Mall
Roosevelt Field is the largest mall on Long Island—it's built on the site of a former airfield of the same name where the likes of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart once took to the skies. Retailers range from teen outfitter Hollister to luxury brands like Hermes, while restaurants include fast-casual spots like Chipotle and fine dining at The Capital Grille. Garden City also has a downtown area along Seventh Street and Franklin Avenue. Eateries in the area include Primehouse Steak & Sushi, Italian restaurant and bar La Nonna Bella and Waterzooi Belgian Bistro & Oyster Bar. There’s a meat market, a gourmet grocer and several clothing boutiques along Seventh Street, and the village offers a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s. The village also offers a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe’s. “There’s so much shopping. Within a 10-minute drive, we have literally anything you can want,” Breslin says.

An Easter parade and other events
The village often hosts events “that bring the community together,” Breslin says. From the Easter Sunday Vintage Car Parade to summer festivals with bands and outdoor dining, it’s not uncommon for the village to close down the main streets to party. The village is also home to the Long Island Children’s Museum and the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

From new condos to landmarked homes
Garden City is a desirable destination where demand outweighs supply. Housing stock includes colonials and split-level homes that cost between $850,000 and $3 million, with some closer to $6 million. The Apostle Houses, featuring mansard roofs and cupolas, were built by A.T. Stewart in the early days of the village and are part of a nationally recognized historic district. These cost around $2.5 million. There are also upscale co-ops and amenitized condos near the downtown area. One-bedroom condos range from $600,000 to $750,000, while a larger unit could reach around $2 million. These condominiums’ location and smaller size make them popular housing options, especially among seniors.

Highly rated schools with strong athletic programs
Children can attend Homestead or Locust schools for kindergarten and first grade, which get B and B-plus ratings, respectively, on Niche. There are two A-rated elementary schools, Stratford Avenue and Stewart schools. Garden City Middle School is next, followed by Garden City High School, both of which have an A rating from Niche. Garden City High School boasts strong athletics: the girls’ basketball team was undefeated during the 2023-34 season, and eight football team members were declared All New York state selections. Adelphi University is also in Garden City.

Supervised parks and the Garden City Pool complex
The village has five supervised parks that provide greenspace, courts, picnic areas and playgrounds. The Garden City Pool complex is accessible to residents in the summer for a small fee. “It’s a big complex with three pools and a snack bar that even has adult beverages,” Breslin says. There’s also an interactive play pool and slides, and events are held throughout the season. St. Paul’s Field has soccer and lacrosse fields, and there’s also the Garden City Gazebo near Seventh Street, where there are live concerts in the summer. In addition, there are several private golf courses in the area.

Five LIRR stations serve Garden City
“We’re only a 35-minute commute by train,” Breslin says, referring to the Long Island Rail Road. “We have five stations in town and two train lines.” Those who prefer to drive can take I-495 to Midtown Manhattan via the Queens-Midtown Tunnel—it’s about 25 miles.

Everything here is efficient. It is a key word, because I don't mean to say they are really "interesting" or "unique," but you can definitely expect high quality. Sure, there are a couple exceptions to the lackluster aura here, such as MINT or The Witches Brew, but generally you will see an influx of Irish restaurants and pubs. As for bars, Prost is pretty good, and has a wide variety of beers. That is where most younger people go. 7th street has many bars to check out, but most of them are sports bars. As said, I recommend SushiYa as a food option - any roll on the menu will bring you joy. As mentioned, The Witches Brew is by far the most interesting eatery in town, but it is mostly a tea and dessert cafe. I reccomend the Pecan Pie as well as the Strawberry Tea there. It has a somewhat "goth" feel, with lights hanging in every window, archaic looking furniture, and an old piano that only somewhat works. I'm sure it's a total blast on Halloween. MINT is very cool, and possibly the only "night club" in town. Very pricey, however. They serve Indian food in fabulous settings.
