A neighborly community on the rise
Gordon Heights is the kind of neighborhood many people drive through without realizing they’ve crossed a border. Sandwiched between Middle Island and Coram, it’s been linked to the pair of more recognizable hamlets for years, but it has features of its own that set it apart. “Gordon Heights is beautiful and wooded,” says Robert Bianco, a Realtor and the office manager at Island Advantage Realty. “It’s appealing here because it’s not as developed as Coram and Middle Island. It also happens to be an up-and-coming neighborhood right now.” With roots as a Black community formed by people who left New York City in the 1920s with the hope of a better life and the chance to own land, the people of Gordon Heights continue to look out for each other. “It’s quiet, neighborly,” says Bill Chavis, an associate broker at Re/Max Signature Real Estate who has sold homes here for about 40 years. “It seems like the people in there watch over the area.”

Large wooded lots or golf course views
“What draws people there these days are there are some larger properties,” Chavis says. “There’s a number of larger properties there, and I think the original setup back in the 1920s was for larger properties.” Whether homeowners want smaller lots or homes with an acre, Gordon Heights has options. Bianco and Chavis also say that the variety of housing available in the neighborhood is attractive to homebuyers. Ranch-style, hi-ranch and colonial homes are often found on wooded lots, and there are a few subdivisions like Strathmore on the Green, a gated community that offers residents amenities like a pool, tennis courts and lawn care. It curves around the Spring Lake Golf Club, providing some homes with views of the club’s golfing green — thus the community’s name. There’s also a smattering of new constructions in the area. Although the occasional fixer-upper can dip into the $300,000 range, most homes here cost between $450,000 and $550,000.

Local fishing and swans at Bartlett Pond Park
Locals take their children to Bartlett Pond Park to let loose on the playground, teach them how to fish in the pond, or simply observe local wildlife. A pair of swans live here, and during the right time of year, residents can even catch sight of them raising their babies in the park. On the other side of the neighborhood, Children’s Park offers a playground with swings, a basketball court and a baseball field. Nearby, Cathedral Pines County Park is a popular spot for weekend camping trips or an afternoon of hiking or mountain biking. Those looking for a different kind of thrill head to High Velocity Paintball to challenge their friends on one of its seven themed fields. Gordon Heights is also surrounded by country clubs and golf courses. Spring Lake Golf Club is located right in the neighborhood, but residents can also choose between Pine Ridge Golf Club, Mill Pond Golf Course and Middle Island Country Club within 5 miles of home.

Local dining, major retailers along Middle Country Road
Gordon Heights is largely residential, but there are a few eateries along Middle Country Road. Tainos Café & Lounge is known for its mofongo, lively music and hookah, making it a popular spot on the weekends. Locals also head to Taqueria Little Mexico for its incredible tacos or cross the street to eat Salvadoran fare at Lucia Middle Island. Just 2 miles away, Coram Plaza offers more local restaurants alongside fast food chains, Home Depot and a Stop & Shop for groceries. Heading in the opposite direction, locals can also pick up groceries at Walmart 3 miles from home.

20 minutes to local beaches
Middle Country Road, also known as State Route 25, runs along Gordon Heights’ northern border. Aside from this, most of the streets that run through Gordon Heights are smaller, contributing to its overall wooded, residential atmosphere. It still only takes a few minutes, however, to get onto major roads like William Floyd Parkway or Interstate 495, and being almost right at the center of Long Island means that it’s about a 20-minute drive to beaches on both the North Shore and South Shore.

Traditional celebration in Children’s Park
For nearly 100 years, Gordon Heights has held an annual Children’s Parade & Family Celebration in Children’s Park. After a parade, the day-long event features live music, food trucks, local vendors and plenty of games alongside a raffle. The neighborhood also has a tree lighting ceremony at the Mott House in nearby Coram where locals munch on gingerbread cookies and warm up with hot cocoa while listening to a local choir and counting down the seconds until the tree lights up.

Its not the worst area, but its getting worse and worse kind of frequently. I don't know if its the community residents or the town leadership but something needs to change.
