Commuting, dining and shopping in Hempstead
First settled by Dutch colonists in the 1600s, the village of Hempstead has long been a hub of commerce in Long Island. Although the village has transformed over the centuries, it remains a diverse spot with popular local restaurants, spacious parks and nearby shopping destinations. Hempstead is the largest community by population, not just in the Town of Hempstead but in all of Nassau County. “It’s a very nice community not too far from Queens and Brooklyn. The Roosevelt Field Mall and Hofstra University are right there, and there’s a big park,” says Sheila Miles, a licensed real estate agent and owner of Prime Realty who has over 13 years of experience. Hempstead makes it easy to stay in for the day, go for a drive or find a local restaurant to try.

Hempstead has buses and trains to New York City
The Rosa Parks - Hempstead Transit Center, where buses take commuters to New York City, sits across the street from Hempstead Station. Trains on the Long Island Rail Road stop at the station frequently and connect to the city. The Southern State Parkway, which runs along the village’s southern border, guides commuters 12 miles west to John F. Kennedy International Airport and 12 miles south to Jones Beach State Park. Mercy Hospital is only 2 miles south on the other side of Southern State Parkway.

Dining downtown and visiting Roosevelt Field mall
El Rincon Dominicano, La Hacienda and Pollos Mario Steak House & Seafood are some of the nearby restaurants that show the village's diversity. “Roosevelt Field mall is very close, maybe 10 minutes away. It’s a great selling point for people who don’t want to go to outlets in Riverhead. Roosevelt Field has also had so many changes. They’ve added stores like Neiman Marcus and done a lot of expansions,” says Femi Adebanjo, an associate broker at Keller Williams Legendary with over 12 years of experience. When it’s time to pick up groceries, residents can also visit CTown Supermarkets, Key Food Supermarket or Stop & Shop.

Colonial-style homes near it all
Most homes in Hempstead feature Cape Cod and colonial designs with moderate yards and list for $500,000 to $775,000. “Hempstead has lower home prices and lower taxes than nearby areas like Garden City, but it’s still 40 minutes to midtown by train and less than an hour by bus,” says Adebanjo. “I’d say it’s a mix of new people moving and residents who have been there for 20 or 30 years.” A handful of Colonial Revivals sell for over $1 million, but homes with six or more bedrooms built as recently as 2023 land in the $800,000 to $950,000 range. While most cars stay parked on paved driveways, it’s common to see some lining the narrow streets. Because Hempstead is a village, residents pay a village tax, making the taxes in the area on the higher end. Although Downtown Hempstead gets noisy with all the activity, these homes sit on much quieter streets.

Celebrating culture and community with annual events
The St. Paul Greek Orthodox Cathedral organizes an annual Greek Festival from May into June. The community is welcome to try Greek cuisine, hear live music, shop at the flea market and play games. Other places of worship fill Hempstead, including the Vedic Heritage Hindu temple and churches that follow Baptist and non-denominational practices. The Tyree Curry 5K Run/Walk also occurs every June at Kennedy Memorial Park in honor of Tyree Curry, a local teacher who was influential in the community. All funds raised go to the Hempstead Police Activity League (PAL), which organizes social and athletic programs for local children and their families. The CAP Index gives Hempstead a crime score of 6 out of 10, with 10 being the highest. The national average is 4. “The community is very safe. Some people think it’s not because they don’t live there, but I drive around the area a lot,” says Miles.

A large park, welcoming library and nearby museum
Hempstead has small local parks throughout the area, but Kennedy Memorial Park is the biggest green space with a skate park, community pool, paved athletic courts and football field. Hempstead Golf & Country Club members have access to the 18-hole course, pool and fitness center. Library cards from the Hempstead Public Library double as free passes to specific museums, including the Long Island Explorium and Brooklyn Botanic Garden, when cardholders request a pass in advance. The African American Museum of Nassau County keeps a rotation of exhibits highlighting African American artists and culture.
Next to the LIRR in Hempstead is the County Bus Depot.
