From farmland to commercial hub in Long Island
What started as a quiet farming community now stands as the town of Hicksville, a major shopping and transportation hub in Long Island. “It’s a wonderful place for anyone considering living on Long Island because of its rich diversity and remarkable restaurants,” says Mrinalni Sharma, a licensed real estate salesperson at Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty and former community resident. “I still go there because there are wonderful restaurants over there, great shops. They have great schools and parks, and they have fairs and festivals because there are so many different cultures. There’s always something going on.”
Approximately 100 stores call the Broadway Commons in Hicksville home.

Empire Diner, Diwan Indian Restaurant and Bar
“There’s so many people of different cultures that you find different varieties of foods and shops,” Sharma says. “I used to live in Hicksville, but I still go there for my grocery shopping and with my friends to the different restaurants. It’s just wonderful. Every weekend you can go to a different one, and the food is really good.” Diwan Indian Restaurant and Bar is known for its buffet selection that makes grabbing lunch a breeze. Empire Diner serves classic American dishes for breakfast and lunch in a retro-style diner, while Burger Village welcomes hungry shoppers to try their organic and vegan options. In addition to the town’s abundance of restaurants, locals have shopping options minutes from home. Some walk around the Broadway Commons mall to browse the stores, while others pick up essential groceries at Stop & Shop, Target or Patel Brothers.

Commuting to NYC from Hicksville station
When residents want to venture outside of their community for a little extra fun, Hicksville’s central location and access to major highways make it incredibly easy. “It’s so easy to hop in and out of town. It’s only 40 minutes to Manhattan with the train,” says Marie Salerno, a licensed associate real estate broker with Douglas Elliman Real Estate, who specializes in Hicksville, Jericho and the surrounding towns. Thanks to the Wantagh State Parkway, residents can be at Jones Beach on the south shore after a 20-minute drive.
The Hicksville LIRR station has two island platforms and three tracks.
Residents travel on both Newbridge Road and Broadway to get in and out of town.

Small Cape Cods, spacious Colonial Revivals
While Hicksville’s convenient shopping and dining draws in new residents, homes along the wide, sidewalk-lined streets make people settle here. Most are ranch-style homes and Cape Cods built in the 1950s and 1970s, and they often range from $600,000 to $800,000. Grand Colonial Revivals, some built as recently as 2024, sell for $800,000 to almost $2 million. The CAP Index gives Hicksville a crime score of 2 out of 10, with 1 being the lowest possible score. The national average is 4. “Hicksville is gaining increasing attention from developers who are actively purchasing and flipping properties in need of renovations or constructing new homes altogether,” Salerno says. She mentions the town has a diverse character, with a vibrant commercial district around Broadway and the train station, complemented by pockets of residential neighborhoods ranging from cozy to spacious. "It's a unique blend," Salerno says, "offering the seclusion and charm of a peaceful community while keeping you within proximity to all the amenities and conveniences."
Residents of Hicksville take pride in maintaining the front lawns of their Cape Cod homes.

Cantiague Park
At 127 acres, Cantiague Park is by far the biggest green space in Hicksville, and its large playground and athletic fields make it a focal point for the community. Locals can sign up for ice skating lessons at the ice rink, purchase passes to the community pool or head next door to the 9-hole Cantiague Golf Course. Families who want a more laidback experience try their hand at the 18-hole mini golf course when it’s open in the summer. Residents also start their summers off by purchasing beach parking stickers before taking a trip 20 minutes south to The Town of Oyster Bay Beach. While Cantiague Park has the most amenities and options to have fun, other local parks, like the Cpl. Kevin T. Kolm Memorial Park, welcome soccer leagues to compete on the large field and kids to hang out on the playground equipment. Hicksville Public Library also offers book clubs, children’s events and workout classes.

Street fairs, Memorial Day parade
Every October, Jersualem Avenue comes alive with the Chamber of Commerce Street Fair. Residents get together to order treats from food trucks, listen to live music, explore the kid’s fun zone and check out the craft and vendor bazaar. The Hicksville Historic Society always walks in the annual Memorial Day parade with other community groups and members. The Hicksville Summer Carnival draws crowds every year with roller coasters, ferris wheels and fun family games. Hicksville features places of worship for those who practice Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism and Protestantism. Most sit off Broadway in central Hicksville, like St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, but sites like Temple Beth Torah and Shri Ram Sharnam can be found 2 miles or less from Broadway.
The Holy Family Festival has been going for 14 years so far in Hicksville.

Hicksville High School’s marching band took first place in their category at the New York State Field Band Conference Championships in 2023, and many of the athletic teams qualified as NYS Scholar-Athlete Teams for the students’ dedication to their sports and academics. All four schools get B-plus ratings from Niche. Trinity Lutheran School and Holy Trinity High School offer private Christian education in the area.
The Hicksville High School campus contains a very large and well maintained sports complex.

Hicksville has good areas and bad areas. A large portion of the population is Indian. There are many restaurants and stores around, which makes getting anything you need very easy.

This area has a warm and friendly atmosphere. The neighbors are kind and caring. To me, this area will always be my home and safe haven. If I ever leave this neighborhood, I will make sure I come back and visit friends and family.

This area is definitely not going to be the best place to live in a few years. The town and local governments are destroying an otherwise nice are to live in. But the area still remains being one of the best compared to surrounding towns.
