Central Long Island suburb with a freshwater lake and ideal transportation
Located in the center of Long Island, Lake Ronkonkoma is a mostly residential neighborhood that surrounds the eastern edge of its namesake waterbody, the largest and deepest freshwater lake in the region. Before The Hamptons became a popular weekend destination for affluent city dwellers, this hamlet drew in crowds that preferred the area’s tranquil waters over the Atlantic Ocean to the south and the Long Island Sound to the north. “Today, many of the neighborhood’s postwar ranches have been expanded with additions and second floors,” says Larry McKenna, a realtor with Signature Premier Properties and longtime resident of nearby Holbrook. “One of the main draws of living in the area is the proximity of the Long Island Rail Road station in Ronkonkoma, which is perfect for commuters working in New York City.”

Ronkonkoma Station is one of Long Island’s main transportation hubs
Just a few minute's drive from most homes, Ronkonkoma train station is a major transit hub. The Long Island Rail Road gets residents to Midtown Manhattan’s Penn Station within an hour and 20 minutes. Many park their cars in the large lot and garage facility adjoining the depot. Karen Roth, a licensed associate broker with RE/MAX Integrity Leaders, says that commuters who leave from this station are guaranteed a seat on the train as the Main Line Branch begins here and fills up as it approaches Manhattan. The Long Island Expressway runs along Lake Ronkonkoma’s southern edge and gets residents into New York City within an hour and a half to two hours, depending on traffic.

Nearby MacArthur Airport
Long Island MacArthur Airport is also located in Ronkonkoma, and though it has a limited schedule of flights to destinations on the East Coast and Florida, noise from planes can sometimes be a nuisance. “Though there’s no direct public transportation link between the train station and airport at the moment, there’s talk of setting one up,” McKenna says.

Major mixed-use developments
Ronkonkoma and Lake Ronkonkoma are slated to host two new mixed-use developments called Ronkonkoma Hub and Midway Crossing. These massive billion-dollar projects will transform the mostly unused space near the main train station into thriving districts with new retail, sports facilities, airport terminals, and condo complexes attracting homebuyers from the city who still plan to commute in for work. While construction on Hub is underway, Midway Crossing will break ground soon. As with any infrastructural project of this scale, there can be issues surrounding noise, pollution and obstructed roadways.

Portion Road has shopping centers with a ShopRite grocery store and Regal Cinemas movie theater. Island Lake Diner is a neighborhood go-to. Flanagan's Pub is a popular watering hole. San Marzano Trattoria is an upscale pizzeria. While Windows on the Lake is a waterfront events venue, Parsnip Lake House has live music and a lakeside bar.

Updated ranches and colonial revivals
“No two Lake Ronkonkoma homes are the same,” says McKenna. “It’s not a cookie-cutter or newly built community.” Renovated ranches are the norm in the neighborhood and range from $300,000 to $500,000. A handful of larger classic Long Island Hi-Ranches and colonial revivals sell for $450,000 to $850,000, depending on size and condition.

Lake Grove, New York is my favorite place to live for many reasons. My neighborhood is very family friendly and cozy. All my neighbors are friendly and respectful. It's a quiet area, most families are middle class. My high school was fantastic and there's many things to do around my area which makes it enjoyable. I would live here again if I was to do everything all over. I see a future in my career, family, and overall happiness in the future.

It's been a great place to grow up, close enough to Manhattan to take day trips but far enough away to not have to deal with the craziness of city life. There's a beach 20 minutes in every direction and the schools were great to attend with people who really cared about their students.

I live close to two local parks as well as a large lake. The parks are well-kept and nice to spend time in.
