Melville

New developments and historic Colonials
"There have been lots of home renovations," explains Cawley. These renovated homes are typically four-bedroom, three-bathroom ranches or colonials, with a few remaining mid-century modern builds. Larger homes with postmodern architecture are entering the scene with new construction, such as the current Dix Hills development by the home builder, Toll Brothers. There's a slight price difference between the two communities. Melville's homes have a higher average asking price than Dix Hills, which is just over $1 million on average, says Cawley.Academic and athletic opportunities at Half Hollow Hills high schools
Families with children are drawn to the area for the top-rated Half Hollow Hills School District. Across the district are two high schools, two middle schools and five elementary schools spread across Melville and Dix Hills. Both high schools — Half Hollow Hills High School East and West — are situated in Dix Hills. There are more than 25 Advanced Placement courses and partnerships with universities, including Stony Brook University and Long Island University, to offer students the chance to take college-level courses. Learners can also study engineering in connection with the Rochester Institute of Technology "Project Lead the Way" program. Competitive athletics programs are also part of the Half Hollows Hills reputation. The high schools have won championships in golf, soccer, track, fencing, basketball, badminton and swimming.Parks with butterflies and baseball
Melville's natural beauty is thanks in part to bountiful parkland. The West Hills Nature Preserve sprawls along the north side. While the west side offers Dr. Jeffrey Wenig Memorial Park and Butterfly Park. Butterfly Park has a small pond and is tucked between residential areas. And along the western border, Pine Ridge Conservation Area offers winding trails among dense, pristine woods. In Dix Hills, pocket parks are great places for playground visits and athletic games, such as Otsego Park, where locals gather for Little League Baseball games in the spring.Fall is an especially great time to visit White Post Farms of Melville. Pick pumpkins, go on a hayride, and feed animals of the farm and exotic kind. There's a locally famous giraffe, zebras, llamas and lemurs. Children can ride ponies, jump in bounce houses and snack on yummy autumn treats like roasted corn and apple cider.
Locally owned restaurants with global flavors
Broadhollow Road bisects Melville and is its commercial artery. It's where you'll find a string of great eateries, from American steakhouses to Asian bistros. The Refuge offers a creative twist on Latin American and Italian classics amid rustic decor. Try the ropa vieja nachos or the volcano mushroom truffle pizza for something fresh and delicious. The variety continues when dining out in Dix Hills. Eclectic restaurants line East Jericho Turnpike on the neighborhood's northern border. Savory Afghani kebabs are on the menu at Kabul Afghan Restaurant. It's all-American comfort foods at the Dix Hills Diner, where the cheesecake is mmm mmmm magnificent. If you're into shopping, it's less than two miles to the popular Walt Whitman Shops in South Huntington. The high-end shopping mall is stacked with upscale department stores and places to sit down and dine.
