Neighborhood was developed by a museum
Most of Munsey Park's curving streets are named after American artists whose paintings hang in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a nod to the village's development by the museum in 1925. The land was willed to the museum by newspaper publisher Frank A. Munsey, who purchased the land in 1922. Today, residents are drawn to the community's proximity to beaches, museums, airports, parks and recreation facilities and world-class shopping centers. "People move into Manhasset for the schools, for the commute, because it gets you into the city so fast, and because the town is kind of a small town, a kind of Norman Rockwell place to raise a family. I've lived in Manhasset for 28 years, and there's always been strong demand," says Ann Hance, an associate real estate broker at Compass.

Homes reflect 'early Americana'
Tree-shaded sidewalks line streets, creating making the area very walkable. "I think we have a very tight-knit feeling," Hance says. "We have a super social community. It's just a really pretty neighborhood to walk around in, and because of the sidewalks, it's super safe." The Met is responsible for Munsey Park's stately architecture. The museum hired architects in the late 1920s to design the village's original homes in traditional American styles that the community collectively calls "Early Americana." The resulting houses, most of which were built between 1928 and the 1950s, are primarily Colonial revival styles, many with slate roofs, though there are a few Tudor homes in the village. Because of Munsey Park's history, home additions and alterations are reviewed to preserve the village's architectural identity. Buying a home in Munsey Park costs between $1.8 million and $3.9 million. Houses with garages are set back on lots that average around 1/8 acre, a good size for a small garden or gathering area. According to Hance, competition to live in the village is fierce. "We don't have enough inventory, enough homes, to supply the buyers who are looking," Hance says. "So there are definitely more offers per property than there have been in the past."
