Diversity flourishes in North Amityville
In some neighborhoods, street signs tell a story — about their past and their identities. Alongside surnames of past presidents, road signs in North Amityville bear the names of Native American and Civil War-era families who lived in the hamlet for generations, such as Payne, Brewster, Fowler and Devine. To distinguish signs named for Native Americans, the town of Babylon posted markers, featuring the official Montaukett Indian Nation seal. As North Amityville grew from a farming town to a suburb, its status as an unincorporated hamlet meant that developers couldn’t practice the same segregationist tactics they did in other Long Island neighborhoods. As a result, diversity flourished here, and it’s a quality that locals still treasure today. “It’s amazing, you’ll see people from all walks of life,” says Mercedes Reed, a licensed real estate broker and owner of MR Imperial Real Estate who has lived in North Amityville for about 20 years.
Today, North Amityville is also popular for its position just a few miles inland from the South Shore, tucked between the Massapequas, Farmingdale and Copiague. So even though the neighborhood itself is pretty residential, there’s shopping, dining and entertainment in nearly any direction. “I like that I can go to a small grocery store to find my ethnic foods and I like that I can just take a zip less than 10 minutes to the beach,” Reed says. “I love the parks, I love that the town of Babylon is nearby. I think I’m biased because it’s near and dear to my heart because my children were raised there and they went to the schools there, and I have built long-lasting relationships, not even just with my sellers and my buyers… There’s no replacing Amityville in my heart.”
Single-family homes with 'elbow room' starting at $500,000
Hi-ranches are incredibly common in North Amityville, but there are also a lot of Garrison Colonials, ranch-style homes and new traditionals. “For people that come from Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx or the city, it’s literally a breath of fresh air to have elbow room,” Reed says. “Although the density is increasing, particularly in North Amityville with the new development there, I think that the size of the yards is a change from the norm of city life. It's almost like introducing a whole new world to them to have a 50 by 100 lot, which is an average lot size.” Single-family homes typically cost between $500,000 and $750,000. There are also condos in North Amityville, which can cost between $200,000 and $410,000.
Career and technical education at Amityville Memorial High
North Amityville is split among three school districts. Amityville Union Free School District has a B-minus. Children in this district can attend Northwest Elementary School, which has a B, from kindergarten through second grade and Park Avenue School, which has a C, from third through fifth grade. They then attend Edmund W. Miles Middle School, which has a C, and Amityville Memorial High School, which has a B-minus. The high school has a career and technical education program where students can take specialized courses and gain hands-on experience. Other parts of the neighborhood are served by the Copiague Union Free School District, which has a B-plus, and the Farmingdale Union Free School District, which gets an A.
Commuting to Manhattan by train
The Southern State Parkway, state Route 110 and Sunrise Highway all run through North Amityville, but Reed says locals take Country Line Road instead of 110 to avoid traffic. North Amityville is less than 3 miles from two Long Island Rail Road stations — Copiague and Amityville. From there, it takes about an hour to reach Manhattan’s Penn Station. South Oaks Hospital, a psychiatric hospital, is less than 2 miles away, while St. Joseph Hospital is about 5 miles away. John F. Kennedy International Airport is about 24 miles away.
Basketball and free WiFi at Bolden Mack Park
Bolden Mack Park has a popular playground and free WiFi. Its basketball courts are home to the Bolden Mack Basketball League, a mentorship and basketball program for kids and teens. During the summer, residents flock to North Amityville Pool to cool off. The park attached to the pool also has a playground and tennis courts. Just a few miles from Long Island’s South Shore, activities like swimming, boating and kayaking are always a short drive away. Bigger beaches like Jones Beach aren’t too far either — it’s just 14 miles from home.
Shopping and dining in nearby villages
North Amityville is primarily residential, so Jamaica Grand Restaurant is one of just a few restaurants in the neighborhood. There are a few grocery stores here, though, including C-Town Supermarkets and Fruit Tree Farm, which specializes in fresh produce. Despite its residential nature, because North Amityville is surrounded by so many neighborhoods known for buzzy downtowns full of shopping and restaurants, it’s just a short drive to more options. Amityville and Copiague, Reed says, are particularly common stomping grounds for North Amityville residents, who are drawn to the diversity of dining options in the little downtowns. “Between Amityville and Copiague, it’s kind of a mish-mash,” Reed says. “Because I’m a foodie, I love all the restaurants. Different tastes from Dominican to your nice turf and surf to Italian. That’s my favorite — the food.” In Amityville’s little downtown, Vittorio’s is a popular Italian restaurant, and Park Avenue Grill is known for its wide range of gluten-free options.
North Amityville Day, holiday celebrations in Amityville Village
For over 50 years, North Amityville Parade & Festival Day has been held in Bolden Mack Park every June. After an opening parade, the annual event features local food and business vendors, plus DJs, cheerleaders and live musical performances. Amityville also has the annual Tree Lighting Celebration. “I think it’s a time for everyone to get together and get to know your neighbors,” Reed says. “They light the tree, usually our town officials from the town of Babylon are there. Sometimes they have novelty item vendors.” There’s also caroling and a visit from Santa for the kids.
Hurricane season in North Amityville
Hurricane season can impact North Amityville, but because it’s a few miles away from the coast, there’s only a minor risk of flooding in the neighborhood. There’s still a major risk of high winds, though, which are the biggest concern for homeowners here during the stormy season.

I like Amityville! Gentrification is prevalent right now. I would like to see better public transportation and more parks and recreational centers.

There is plenty available in the area but some of the people on the community do not take care or take pride in the community. So businesses suffer. In the area where I live there is a lot of drugs and poverty many of the people in the area are non educated and don't contribute to the neighborhood but instead take away from the community.

I've lived here just about my entire life. When it was time to purchase a home, I could have purchased anywhere, but I chose North Amityville. I feel very safe here, my neighborhood is very quiet. I love the fact that many home have large yards and homes are placed nicely apart. And the vast majority of homes are well kept. I am a product of North Amityville schools from the 2nd grade and I loved my time there. I've done quite well for myself.
