North Merrick

Single-family suburban homes off the Meadowbrook from $600,000
Most of North Merrick is made up of quiet, grassy blocks and suburban subdivisions, lined by a mix of popular single-family home styles built from the 1940s through 1960s. Classic starter homes like Minimal Traditional, bi-level, Colonial Revival and ranch-style homes usually sell for $600,000 to $910,000, but fixer-uppers can go for less. Over the past few decades, many older homes have received significant renovations that expanded their square footage, while others have been demolished and replaced by sprawling New Traditional homes. These larger, more updated homes sell for $830,000 to $1.7 million. Despite the similar age and condition of their housing, the Merricks have higher average home values than the Bellmores. “Usually, North Merrick has more of a premium. The closer you are to the Meadowbrook State Parkway, the closer you are to the city, the more you pay,” says Anthony LaBella, a longtime Bellmore resident and real estate agent with eXp Realty who specializes in the Merricks and Bellmores. North Merrick has a CAP Index crime score of 1 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4."On Tour” theater arts at Sanford H. Calhoun High
Starting in kindergarten, kids will attend one of three elementary schools, including Camp Avenue School which earns an A from Niche. After sixth grade, most of North Bellmore’s students will enter the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District at the A-rated Merrick Avenue Middle and Sanford H. Calhoun High schools. “All of the Bellmore-Merrick school system is top-rated. JFK [High School], where most of the south is zoned for, they’re more regarded for academics. Calhoun is also a very good school, but a lot know it more for the arts,” LaBella notes. Calhoun High’s artsier reputation can be attributed to its housing the district’s "On Tour” theater arts program and cosmetology school. A small, eastern section of North Bellmore attends Grand Avenue Middle School and Wellington C. Mepham High School which earn an A and A-plus respectively.Commuting on the Southern State and Meadowbrook State parkways
The Meadowbrook State Parkway makes up North Bellmore’s western border, connecting the barrier islands of the South Shore to the rest of Long Island. The Southern State Parkway, one of the region’s busiest commuter highways, bisects the hamlet and starts many on the 30-mile drive to Manhattan. A couple of Nassau Inter-County Express buses make stops along Jerusalem Avenue, but public transit access within North Merrick is limited. From the Merrick Long Island Rail Road Station, Penn Station is a roughly 45-minute train ride away. Medical care is available about 3 miles away at Nassau University Medical Center. The nearest airport is John F. Kennedy International, about 14 miles to the west.Classes at North Merrick’s library and nearby Hempstead destination parks
Although North Merrick is not especially rich with green space, a tree-shaded playground and large, grassy field offer a quiet place to get outside at Fraser Avenue Park. North Merrick’s youth leagues are merged with those of North Bellmore, with most games and practices being held on courts and baseball diamonds scattered across the neighboring hamlet. Monthly calendars created by the North Merrick Public Library list dozens of fitness and hobby classes held around the neighborhood and inside the library, organized by those serving children, teens and adults. Norman J. Levy Park & Preserve is a popular destination park in Merrick proper, maintaining a wider regional pull thanks to a winding collection of walking trails, golf course, fishing pier and friendly, weed-munching herd of goats and sheep. Summertime beachgoers make a day of heading to South Shore destinations like Lido Beach, accessible to pass-holding Town of Hempstead residents and less than 12 miles away via the Meadowbrook State Parkway.Shopping and dining on Jerusalem and Merrick Avenues
North Merrick has limited commercial offerings along both Merrick and Jerusalem avenues, each pocketed with the occasional supermarket or restaurant. Outdoor shelves full of flowerpots and seasonal blooms surround Pat’s Farms, lining entryways to aisles full of fresh produce and shelf-stable necessities. Guy Anthony’s serves Italian staples at white tablecloth-covered tables and on a fully stocked bar. My Hero has loaded up sandwiches with cold cuts and hot toppings since 1970. Downtown Merrick offers dozens more shopping and dining options just south of the hamlet along Merrick Avenue, as well as along the much busier rush of Sunrise Highway. A few churches serve different denominations throughout the hamlet, including the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.Fall and springtime Merrick Chamber of Commerce festivals
Fall and springtime festivals fill the streets and LIRR station of North Merrick’s southern neighbor each year, courtesy of the hamlet-spanning Merrick Chamber of Commerce. Carnival rides and family-friendly entertainment are fixtures at the multi-day festivals at both times of the year, but the crafts, fair foods and music change with the seasons. The events that go on within North Merrick tend to center around its elementary schools, including the spooky fall festival and Halloween costume parade that brings together parents and students at Old Mill School each October.
