Trading big city life for Selden's local scene
Eclectic restaurant options, tree-filled streets and close-by commuter options welcome new and existing Selden residents to this Long Island town. “Selden has a hometown feel with local restaurants, nearby outdoor adventures and homes for young couples, families or anyone looking to downsize. People are 40 minutes away from beaches and wineries,” says Jennifer Nyx, a Realtor with Keller Williams who has over six years of experience helping her clients buy and sell homes. “It’s also close to the railroad, so people have the capability to commute into the city.” Whether homeowners choose Selden to get away from big city life or to live closer to commuting options, this hamlet gives people reasons to move to Long Island.

Homes surrounded by trees fill Selden
Four-bedroom Cape Cods, ranch-style homes and Colonial Revivals fill the sidewalk-free streets of Selden. Most have been in the area since the 1960s and 1970s, but some built as recently as 2023 neighbor the older homes. Prices here range from $385,000 to $835,000, with smaller houses falling in the $385,000 to $475,000 range and larger homes in the $500,000 to $800,000 range. Large yards with enough room for a backyard pool are common, and many feature paved driveways that lead to attached garages or carports. Tall trees often grace the front and backyards, providing shade and curb appeal.

Designing the future of robotics at Newfield High
Kids in Selden start out at Stagecoach Elementary School, which earns an A-minus from Niche. After New Lane Memorial, students learn at Seldon Middle School and Newfield High School. Both schools share one campus while Seldon Middle gets a B-plus and Newfield High gets a B. Newfield is also home to the Roverines, a robotics club that recently won their way to compete at the New York State Championships for the fourth year in a row. In the southernmost half of the city, students can attend Suffolk County Community College. The campus sits 2 miles south of the shopping centers and Middle Country Road.

Dog parents get together at Selden Dog Park
The Selden hamlet was designed for relaxing at home and shopping along Middle Country Road, but residents aren’t far from public parks. Some take their kids to Rose Caracappa Park, also known as Liberty Park, to hang out on the playground equipment or to go for a walk along the paved trail. For access to a pool and paved athletic courts, locals take a short drive to Centereach Park off Hawkins Road. Selden Dog Park has wide open space for pups to stretch their legs and socialize. This park is known for being a safe space for dogs since the pet parents who come here tend to be regulars and know each other’s names. Middle County Public Library Selden Branch also welcomes anyone looking for more educational fun in an air-conditioned setting.

Ordering pizza at Caffe Amici and curry at Thai Shack East
Independence Plaza and College Plaza hold most of Selden’s shopping and dining spots. Caffe Amici serves classic Italian dishes and desserts for lunch and dinner in its pizzeria-style restaurant. Customers can also go next door to Nishiki Hibachi & Sushi Restaurant for handcrafted sushi rolls or to Thai Shack East Restaurant for spicy red curry. Some order their burritos or enchiladas to go at Blue Tortilla Fresh Mexican Grille. "People from all over Long Island come to try the plethora of restaurants and cuisines there. Selden is also 25 minutes from the Tanger Outlets in Deer Park and 30 minutes from the one in Riverhead,” Nyx says. Independence Plaza also has a Home Depot, Target and Karako Suits of Selden, while College Plaza has a Five Below and ShopRite. Across the street, House of Spice Halal Meats and Produce is a locally owned specialized grocery store.

Middle Country Road and Patchogue Mount Sinai Road are Seldon's main thoroughfares. Commuters who want to catch the train at Ronkonkoma Station connect onto the Long Island Expressway before waiting at the highly rated station. Most residents rely on their cars to get around town or to the train station since Selden has almost no sidewalks. I have been living in Selden since around the summer of 2017. I moved here in high school, it was a big change compared to the town I used to live in.

As a current resident, there is nothing too special about Selden. However, it's not a bad area either.

The town is convenient in that there are a lot of stores within a close distance of each other. For the most part, the town is clean as well. However, I wish there were more community events to bring everyone together.
