Smithtown
Main Street has a large offering of independent and chain stores
A segment of New York State Route 25, Smithtown’s Main Street winds through quiet residential areas to the north and south. “The downtown area consists of a lot of restaurants and shops,” says Daddio. “There’s a great variety of independent and chain businesses, everything from themed bars to jewelry stores and dry cleaners. Everything you need can be found there.” Popular eateries include Italian mainstays Casa Rustica and La Famiglia. Salsa Salsa of Smithtown is a cozy haunt that serves Mexican standards. Katie’s is a wood-paneled bar with outdoor seating and live music. Other trendy restaurants include Thai House, Rakkii Ramen and H2O Seafood & Sushi. Tous Les Jours is a locally beloved bakery. Grocery stores include The Fresh Market, Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace and Stop & Shop.Smithtown Festival Day in June
Every June, the Greater Smithtown Chamber of Commerce blocks off Main Street for the annual Smithtown Festival Day event. A wide array of vendors set up tents, bouncy castles and other family-friendly activities. Thousands of residents come out for the festivities.A wide variety of homes on streets lined with old growth trees
Although much of central Long Island is facing a housing shortage, Smithtown has a wide variety of homes ranging from postwar co-op complexes with units selling for upwards of $220,000 to sprawling waterfront colonial and Tudor-revival mansions selling for $3 million. In between, bungalows, Cape Cods and ranches sell for $350,000 to $700,000, depending on size and condition. Attached Townhome-Style condos closer to the Main Street commercial area and Classic Long Island Hi Ranches spread throughout hover around the $500,000 mark. Larger Brookfield colonial, Center Hall colonial and a few postmodern homes fetch between $650,000 and $950,000. Newer millennium and historic mansions closer to the water top out at $3 million. Some of the best schools on Long Island

While Long Island’s oldest private boarding institution The Knox School is located near the Sound, parochial school St. Patrick is situated on East Main Street.Verdant green spaces on all sides
Blydenburgh, Forestwood Caleb Smith State and Arthur H. Kunz parks combine as one large nature preserve that runs along the Nissequogue River, which eventually feeds into the Long Island Sound. This extended green lung features hiking trails, dog runs and lakes for canoeing. Sweetbriar Nature Center is a historic estate turned 54-acre preserve. Well-maintained bay-side golf courses include Smithtown Landing and Nissequogue Golf Club. Robert A. Brady Park has ample open-to-the-public sports fields as do many area schools.
