Valley Stream
Neighborhood in Long Island, New York
Suffolk County 11580, 11581

Tidy lawns and tree-lined streets
There’s a variety of homes in the village, from 1920s colonial-inspired houses to Cape Cods built in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as newer ranches. “We do not have many co-ops or townhouses compared to other neighborhoods,” Kim says. Prices range from around $630,000 for a three-bedroom home to close to $1 million for a five-bedroom house with multiple bathrooms. Residences often have trim lawns and sit on tree-lined streets. A small sliver in the southwest corner of Valley Stream, close to Motts Creek, has higher home prices, with ranch properties regularly selling for $1.1 million or more.Greenspace and a swimming complex at Hendrickson Park
Arthur J. Hendrickson Park is at the center of village life, which hosts community events and has a mini golf course and a swimming complex with an interactive kiddie water park and diving and Olympic-sized pools. The 45-acre green space also offers fishing in Valley Stream Pond; basketball, tennis and handball courts; and walking trails that connect to Valley Stream State Park—across the street from Hendrickson Park—for about a 3-mile loop, Kim says. “It’s really beautiful and serene there,” she adds. The state park offers additional picnic space with grills, play areas and courts over its 97 acres.Valley Stream has a Blue Ribbon high school
Valley Stream boasts highly rated schools for students of all ages. Elementary schools in the village include Howell Road and Wheeler Avenue—both of which get an A rating on Niche—and James A. Dever, which gets an A minus. Memorial Junior High School, also A-minus rated, was designated a School to Watch by the New York State Education Department and National Forum in June 2023. Valley Stream Central High School was declared a Blue Ribbon school by the U.S. Department of Education in 2022. It gets an A-plus rating from Niche, which also named it the top magnet school in New York state. Two LIRR stations, plus easy highway access
There are two LIRR stations in Valley Stream, and the train is the fastest way to get to Midtown. LIRR also makes it easy to get to Queens, Brooklyn or other points on Long Island. The Cross Island Parkway runs north to south through the neighborhood, connecting to I-495 and other major highways.Green Acres Mall is the area’s biggest shopping destination
Many of Valley Stream’s shops and restaurants are clustered along Rockaway Avenue, including Mitchell’s Restaurant, a village institution since 1938. Itgen’s Ice Cream Parlour, which opened two years earlier, serves up sweet treats and American fare. There are also bakeries like Little Sugar Shop and Il Corso Pastry Shop. International eateries in Valley Stream include Jojo’s Juice Bar and Grill, with Caribbean-style fare, and the Peruvian restaurant Millennium Chicken. Central Avenue is another shopping area in the village, but Green Acres Mall—with big box stores and national food chains, plus an Aldi grocery store—is the largest shopping destination in the area.
