Residential neighborhood near retail and recreation
Roughly 3 miles southwest of Downtown Longmont, Schlagel’s expansive neighborhood landscape is broken into two parts: winding suburban streets in the west, and an industrial sector with commercial spaces to the east. “Twenty years ago, the area would’ve been considered the outskirts of town, but now there’s a lot built around there,” says Broker Associate and Team Lead Regan Sample with eXp Realty. The established community also has access to plenty of outdoor recreation with nearby open spaces.

Suburban streets with single-family homes
Homes in Schlagel are lined along cul-de-sacs and loops that branch out from the neighborhood’s residential streets. Lot sizes are large, giving homeowners space for fenced-in backyards and gardens. Contemporary Craftsman homes built in the late 1990s are common, sporting features such as attached garages, front porches, multiple front gables and stone accents. These properties range from 1,200 to 2,800 square feet. Prices go for $550,000 to $800,000, depending on the number of stories. There are also brick ranch-style homes that cost similar prices. In the northern part of the neighborhood along Stonebridge Drive, multi-story townhouses have since been constructed, beginning in the 2020s. These properties are priced around $500,000, with little variation.

Parks and natural areas with recreation
Within Schlagel, there are a handful of green spaces. Willow Farm Park is farm-themed with a restored barn structure on the grounds and a playground with tractors. There’s also a basketball court and an outdoor roller hockey rink. In 2018, an online third party created a faux business and dropped a Google Maps marker for the Kristen Schaal Greenspace, named in honor of the Longmont native and actress best known for her work on “Bob’s Burgers” and “What We Do in the Shadows.” The name has since remained and changing it would require an official decision from a Parks and Recreation advisory board, in conjunction with the city council. Additionally, the neighborhood is flush with trails that run through parks and behind back yards. “One of the big draws to the area is that the walking and biking trails connect to the schools and to Golden Ponds. They also go into Boulder,” Sample says.
Directly north of the neighborhood is the expansive Golden Ponds Nature Area, with four ponds and miles of paved and gravel multi-use paths. Visitors can go fishing on the piers or admire the local wildlife. Picnic shelters dot the open space with barbeque grills. Adjacent to Golden Ponds is the Boulder County Fairgrounds, with its campgrounds and community garden. The area hosts the Boulder County Farmers Market every Saturday in the summer, and the Boulder County Fair for a week in August.

With Schlagel’s expansive landscape, a vehicle is typically required for traveling to and from places. Colorado Highway 119, also known as Diagonal Highway, runs south of the neighborhood and connects commuters to both the rest of Longmont and Boulder. Those who prefer public transportation can use Regional Transportation District (RTD) bus services with stops along Hover Street, Clover Basin Drive and Airport Road. Several bike- and pedestrian-friendly trails wind throughout the neighborhood.
Less than a mile north of the neighborhood, the Vance Brand Municipal Airport offers skydiving opportunities, flight school and private hangars. “There’s a grassy picnic area near the airport. Planes come in super low, and families like to go over there and watch the airplanes take off and land,” Sample says. For commercial flights, the Denver International Airport is 43 miles away.
