1940s homes under $450,000

The gridded streets of Saint Helens are lined with streetlamps and telephone wires. Those strolling the sidewalks may notice the trees becoming larger and leafier approaching Lake Sacajawea Park. Some yards are enclosed by chain-link or wooden fences. Cars are parked in alleys behind the homes, either in detached garages or simply behind the house. Tidy, modest yards are proportional to the homes, which are typically 1500 square feet or smaller. Homes include ranch-style and bungalows built in the 1940s. Prices range from $255,000 to $435,000.

Popular restaurants in The Triangle Center

Many of Longview’s shops and restaurants are in The Triangle Center, just 2 miles northeast of Saint Helens. “I’m not sure that you’ll walk to a restaurant from Saint Helens, but Silver Star and The Office 842 are pretty popular,” says Scott Foister, local Realtor with RE/MAX Premier Group. Silver Star Sports Bar & Grill has live music and a happy hour, and The Office 842 is an all-day cocktail lounge serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. However, locals can grab a bite at My Thai Kitchen within the neighborhood, which is right next door to 20th Avenue Grocery. More neighborhood markets and restaurants line Oregon Way along the eastern edge of Saint Helens.

Getting around by car and by bus

With two parks and two schools located within the neighborhood, Saint Helens is considered somewhat walkable and bikeable. For other errands and outings, bus stops connect passengers to the rest of Longview and to Kelso, the neighboring city across the Cowlitz River. The nearest hospital, PeaceHealth St. John Medical Center, is just 1 mile away. This hospital is the only one in the county; it serves an area bigger than Rhode Island and Connecticut combined and includes a Level III Trauma Center. Going to the nearest airport, however, requires a longer trek: Portland International Airport is about 47 miles south down Interstate 5, the main north to south highway in the region.

Scenic Lake Sacajawea

Picturesque Lake Sacajawea creates the northern border of Saint Helens and Cloney Park creates the western border. “Lake Sacajawea is really popular. Everybody walks their dogs and jogs – it’s always busy every time I drive by. It’s probably the biggest thing in Longview,” says Michelle Rohrbach, broker at John L. Scott Real Estate who specializes in southwest Washington. Here, residents can stop and smell the flowers while walking through the Frank Willis Arboretum and the Japanese garden. The lake contains trout and bass, and fishing is permitted year-round. Families can stop by Lake Sacajawea on select summer nights for free concerts and movie showings. On a typical day, bikers and picnickers may spot geese by the lake (and should keep an eye out for droppings). Cloney Park contains a BMX bike track, a skate park and a playground.

We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
