Found atop the ridge of Lookout Mountain with a soaring view of the valleys below, Hinkles is a small neighborhood just below the Tennessee-Georgia state line of Chattanooga. It’s just out of the way of the busiest hiking zones – areas with high tourism traffic – without losing any of the ease and beauty of mountain town living.

If you’re looking for acreage and calming quiet, Hinkles is an excellent option. The architectural styles in the area are diverse as well, so you can enjoy finding something that suits your personal taste. Ranch homes are common, as are cute cottage styles, and older homes in the area often are well-maintained or have undergone renovation to keep them up to date with the times. You can find newer homes of all sizes, from modern brick bungalows to sprawling stucco Tudor-inspired properties and contemporary farmhouses. In the last few years, town houses and condos have become more prevalent, and small subdivisions have started to develop. However, you can still easily find something tucked away into the wooded backroads if you want that solitude.

The median selling price for town houses in Hinkles is $390,000, while single-family homes have a median of $890,000. The market moves fast, with properties typically going under contract within two weeks. Residential spaces didn’t take off in Hinkles until the end of the 20th century, and plenty of new construction is popping up, so most properties you’ll come across are quite modern.

If following a traditional route of public schooling, students begin at either Chattanooga Valley Elementary School or Fairyland Elementary. While both are considered above average by Niche in terms of academics and staff, Fairyland Elementary takes the No.1 spot for best elementary school in the Chattanooga area with an overall A- ranking. It also scores a whopping 10 out of 10 in all aspects of GreatSchools rankings – test scores, academic progress and equity. Children then move on to Chattanooga Valley Middle School – another highly rated institution – and finish their primary education at Ridgeland High. Students can prepare for the next step in their academic career through several college prep programs, and Ridgeland offers a diverse and vast list of extracurriculars.

If planning to live atop the mountain, keep in mind that Hinkles doesn’t have any commercial areas. Anything you’ll need for errand runs will be found in the valley below, but it’s hardly a long haul. You’re only minutes away from popping into the local grocery store, taking the car to the shop or finding necessities such as gas stations and pharmacies.

One of Hinkles biggest appeals is its abundance of nature, and with that comes bountiful opportunities for outdoor recreation. You’re minutes away from the famed Rock City Gardens, but peak tourism can make the area quite busy. Residents of Hinkles have plenty of hiking trails at their disposal that don’t get as much foot traffic, such as the winding path through the woods that leads to Lula Lake and Lula Falls. Just south of Hinkles is also Cloud Canyon State Park, where a deep gorge provides breathtaking views, and there are multiple waterfalls to visit.

If you’re looking for the peace that comes with mountain living but want to be close to city convenience, Hinkles is undoubtedly a worthy consideration.
