Distinguished suburban living east of Louisville
Whitehall is a Southern-style Greek Revival mansion built in 1855 and located in the Louisville suburb of Cherokee Gardens. The grounds, open daily to the public and rentable for private events, feature several gardens. While Whitehall no longer houses residents, several other properties in Cherokee Gardens are on the National Register of Historic Places. These large, historic homes sit distanced from residential streets, showcasing their classic architectural influences. "When people come here, they like that it has a distinguished, antique air," says Carol Grisanti, Associate Director at Whitehall. The neighborhood is, however, much more than historic homes and beautiful gardens. Several nearby green spaces like Cherokee and Seneca Park support active lifestyles while Interstate 64 runs just south of the neighborhood, providing access to the Louisville's entertainment and dining just 7 miles to the west. The neighborhood receives a CAP Index crime score of 2 out of 10, half the national average of 4.
A wide selection of historic homes
Homes date from the early 1900s to about 1955 and are known for their vintage designs and serene natural surroundings. Architectural styles run the gamut from Cape Cods to ranch styles to Classical and Colonial Revivals, most of which are brick constructions. Decorative gardens accent many of the large front yards, and some have cobblestone walkways reminiscent of the English countryside. “The area is really beautiful," says Steve Minor, a Realtor with RE/MAX Properties East. Housing inventory is relatively low, and homes tend to sell faster than the national average. "Elizabethan homes there are particularly popular, and many have been kept in a family for generations," says Minor. Most homes in Cherokee Gardens are priced from about $450,000 to $800,000, though some large estate homes can sell for upwards of $1.5 million.
