A close-knit community overlooking Louisville
Named for its high elevation and hilly terrain, Clifton was first established in the 1800s as a suburb of Louisville, Kentucky's largest city. Today, Clifton is known for its antique homes, small businesses, and perhaps its most unique feature: the Kentucky School for the Blind, which first opened its doors in 1855. Jay Gulick, who works in Clifton as a Managing Broker for Kentucky Select Properties says, "All of the businesses here are used to having visually-impaired folks coming in," and the community also features raised pavers on sidewalks and speaker-equipped stoplights at each intersection to accommodate persons with visual impairments. "There's a real sense of pride in being a good neighbor here," adds Gulick. Just 3 miles from downtown, Clifton strikes a balance between the walkability of the city and the dedicated, multi-generational community of an established suburb. Steve Minor, a Realtor for Re/Max Properties East, sums it up by saying, "It’s the biggest small town you’d want to live in.”

Historic homes with diverse pricing
Most homes in Clifton were built in the early 1900s, although several notable homes like the Rastetter House were built as far back as 1845. Because of this, Clifton is part of a historic preservation district, so whenever homeowners want to make exterior changes, they have to go through a city approval process. "It helps people to keep investing when they know things are gonna stay looking nice and also consistent with the historical vibe of the neighborhood," says Gulick. Ranging in design from bungalow and shotgun-styles to the more ornate farmhouse and Classical Revivals, most single-family homes in Clifton sell from about $250,000 to $400,000, with some larger properties going for as high as $650,000. Tree-lined sidewalks contour homes, which sit back from the sidewalk, leaving room for small front yards or landscaped walkways. Those looking for smaller options will also find apartments, condos and duplexes in the area.

Nearby parks and climbing the Chicken Steps
When it comes to getting outside, Clifton Park and Bingham Park are the two outdoor spaces located within Clifton. Bingham, which is right in the center of the neighborhood, is known for its fields and leafy tree canopy that spans over 4 acres. Kids can splash around in the parks fountain, play on the playground or aim for the skies on the park swing set. A paved, winding pathway also leads through the park, making it easy to walk the dog, or to get out for a run. Clifton Park, while smaller, has courts for folks to play basketball or tennis, and also features a unique fish-shaped tunnel on its playground. Another one of Clifton's outdoor attractions is the “Chicken Steps,” located between Vernon Avenue and Brownsboro Road. Ascending a cliff that separates the two thoroughfares, the name isn’t a play on words or a joke: chickens once raised in the area sometimes ended up flying the coop here in search of literal greener pastures. Their owners would have to take the long way around in order to retrieve them from where they grazed, so the steps were constructed for a quicker route up and down the steep incline.
Kids enjoy the playground equipment at Bingham Park.
Bingham Park features a walking path that connects the basketball courts with the playground.
