Clifton

Historic homes with diverse pricing
Most homes in Clifton were built in the early 1900s, although several notable homes like the Rastetter House were built as far back as 1845. Because of this, Clifton is part of a historic preservation district, so whenever homeowners want to make exterior changes, they have to go through a city approval process. "It helps people to keep investing when they know things are gonna stay looking nice and also consistent with the historical vibe of the neighborhood," says Gulick. Ranging in design from bungalow and shotgun-styles to the more ornate farmhouse and Classical Revivals, most single-family homes in Clifton sell from about $250,000 to $400,000, with some larger properties going for as high as $650,000. Tree-lined sidewalks contour homes, which sit back from the sidewalk, leaving room for small front yards or landscaped walkways. Those looking for smaller options will also find apartments, condos and duplexes in the area.Jefferson County public schools close to home
While there aren’t any schools directly within Clifton’s boundaries, several can be found within just a short drive. Breckinridge-Franklin Elementary is located just southwest of Clifton and scores a C-minus rating from the educational review site, Niche. Serving students from kindergarten through fifth grade, this school touts a 9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Barret Traditional Middle School receives an A-minus grade from Niche and the site also ranks the Barret as one of the top 50 middle schools in the state. Older students move on to Atherton High School, which ranks 16th in the state for public high schools and receives an A-minus grade. Atherton High is also recognized for its college prep courses and diversity, according to Niche.Nearby parks and climbing the Chicken Steps
When it comes to getting outside, Clifton Park and Bingham Park are the two outdoor spaces located within Clifton. Bingham, which is right in the center of the neighborhood, is known for its fields and leafy tree canopy that spans over 4 acres. Kids can splash around in the parks fountain, play on the playground or aim for the skies on the park swing set. A paved, winding pathway also leads through the park, making it easy to walk the dog, or to get out for a run. Clifton Park, while smaller, has courts for folks to play basketball or tennis, and also features a unique fish-shaped tunnel on its playground. Another one of Clifton's outdoor attractions is the “Chicken Steps,” located between Vernon Avenue and Brownsboro Road. Ascending a cliff that separates the two thoroughfares, the name isn’t a play on words or a joke: chickens once raised in the area sometimes ended up flying the coop here in search of literal greener pastures. Their owners would have to take the long way around in order to retrieve them from where they grazed, so the steps were constructed for a quicker route up and down the steep incline.Locally owned options on Frankfort Avenue
Along Clifton's Frankfort Avenue, locals can pick-up a warm drink at Quill's Coffee before heading out to shop for some new music at Guestroom Records, which stocks a wide variety of vinyl, CDs and cassette tapes. Sister restaurants Morning Fork and Fork & Barrel have an air of southern charm, where patrons can stop in for brunch at the former and dinner at the latter. Please and Thank You offers an assortment of cookies and baked goods; while the Silver Dollar, located within the historic Albert A. Stoll Firehouse, offers patrons a wide selection of bourbon to pair with their meals. For groceries, Kroger is also right in the neighborhood, just off of Brownsboro Road.Community events in Bingham Park
Groups like the Clifton Community Council and the Frankfort Avenue Business Association also come together to host neighborhood events like the annual Easter Parade or the Chili Cook Off. "There's always stuff going on," says Gulick, who's also involved with organizing the Olmsted Parks Beer Garden event. Every fall, folks come to Bingham Park to visit a local brewery while also playing family-friendly games and enjoying food from a variety of vendors.Getting around the greater Clifton area
