Germantown
Homes from the early 20th century
Rows of shotgun homes are commonplace within Germantown and are among the most popular architectural styles there. Bungalows and camelbacks can also be found along its streets, some of those roads lined with sidewalks leading to inclined front yards and small steps rising to the front walk. Houses may have a combination of siding and brick making up its exterior, and there are also even homes primarily built with stone. Prices typically range from around $150,000 to $350,000, averaging around $250,000 with some going for north of $400,000. A large draw to the area are college students. “It’s close to the University of Louisville,” Minor says. “The college is a few miles to the west. There’s lots of student interest to live in the neighborhoods around it, whether by purchase or rental.”Schools in proximity to Germantown
From kindergarten through fifth grade, students can attend Bloom Elementary School, which is awarded a grade of B by Niche. No schools are situated within Germantown’s established borders, but Bloom feeds into Jefferson County Traditional Middle School, ranked within the top 100 middle schools in the entire state and also given a B. Seneca High School hosts ninth through 12th grades, named one of the most diverse high schools in Kentucky and receiving a C-plus on Niche. At Seneca High School, students can partake in a number of clubs, including organizations themed towards sports, CSI and Harry Potter as well as dream interpretation, sewing and more.Small parks and a mid-neighborhood creek
Two quaint pocket parks are located within Germantown’s boundaries. German-Paristown Park is a little under half an acre and features trees and a playground, while Gnadinger Park ranks as the smallest public space in Louisville, measuring about .03 acres and taking no more than a few seconds to walk across. In the southeastern corner of Germantown is Saint Michael Cemetery and a few minutes to the east lies Cherokee Park, which spans close to 400 acres. Visitors to Cherokee can enjoy plenty of pathways for walking or biking, sports fields for pickup games and a playground. Originating at the Ohio River, part of South Fork Beargrass Creek also winds its way through Germantown.Wide-ranging food selections throughout Germantown
For a slice of New York-style pizza, The Post is located off of Goss Avenue to the southwestern side of Germantown. Less than half a mile down the same road is the Pearl of Germantown, a retro bar that features DJ nights, weekend events and a laid-back atmosphere complete with multicolored string lights above and a patio outside. Just to the southwest, within a few blocks of each other, are The Merryweather, a bar at the corner of Lydia and Hickory Streets at the end of a row of shotgun houses, and Check’s Café, which offers its patrons German fare while providing entertainment including big games on the television and concerts in the restaurant. A nearby Kroger helps fulfill grocery necessities.Thrifting on the northeast boundary
Residents don’t have to go far to find local shopping outlets. On the northeastern boundary of Germantown, Fat Rabbit Thrift & Vintage and The Nitty Gritty are two beloved local staples for their throwback offerings, located right beside each other on the corner of Barret Avenue and East Kentucky Street. Fat Rabbit is in the former Speier Hardware building and still retains the original business’ neon sign above their storefront offering used clothing, media like films and music, general accessories and more. The Nitty Gritty, less than a minute’s trek around the corner, stocks vintage clothing and also rents out costumes. As for local events, the neighborhood hosts an Oktoberfest celebration every fall to pay homage to its roots.Downtown Louisville rises close by
About 15 minutes to the west lies West Broadway, a primary thoroughfare of downtown Louisville. West Broadway is a hub for nightlife and eateries for Louisville as a whole, and East Broadway makes up the small north-facing border of Germantown. Logan Street runs to the west and Goss Avenue to the south, giving the neighborhood’s residents plenty of access to local establishments, and just to the west is Interstate 65. Running from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes, the highway has major stops in Nashville and Indianapolis while also paving the way through Louisville.
