Hikes Point
Suburban Neighborhood in Louisville, Kentucky
Jefferson County 40220

Established homes from the mid-century
Reflecting the post-war suburban boom – the median build year for homes in this neighborhood is 1960 – and as such, Hikes Point features mostly Cape Cod and ranch-style homes. For those looking for a slightly larger house, this community also offers some two-story colonial revival styles. Hikes Point “Is a family-oriented area where you can expect to live in a nice, quiet neighborhood,” says Bob Sokoler, owner of the Sokoler Team RE/MAX Properties East, who has more than two decades of experience selling in the area. In addition to single-family homes, prospective buyers can also choose from a variety of apartment and condo options. With condos generally selling for between $200,000 and $275,000. The similarity of home options leads to a pretty tight price band – with ranch-style and Cape Cod homes generally going for between $200,000 to $325,000, while multi-story split-levels (that often feature a coveted fourth bedroom) fall within the range of $250,000 to $400,000. Homes here don’t stay on the market long and usually sell quickly, spending less time on the market than the national average.Nearby parks offer green havens for play and relaxation
The compact nature of the neighborhood means that residents have to roam the parks in surrounding areas, such as Des Pres Park with its charming walking path as well as a playground and basketball, tennis and pickleball courts. For residents seeking forested trails, views of Beargrass Creek and a wetland area home to cattails and waterfowl, Brown Park and Arthur K. Draut Park are two great options connected by a half-mile of sidewalks. Like much of Louisville, there are plenty of golfing options in the vicinity - in addition to a half-dozen golf courses with ten minutes, “There’s a Topgolf, which just opened there, which is a tremendous draw, and families go there,” says Laura Nicholson, Realtor with Keller Williams Louisville East.Traditional magnet schools offer great options
Set within the Waggener High Zone, students generally start out at St. Matthews or Alex Kennedy Elementary schools – graded B-minus and C-plus, respectively, by Niche – before moving up to Westport Middle School, which earns a C-plus. They finish at Waggener High School, rated a C, which offers Academy programs focused on specific fields. Students can concentrate on subjects before college to direct their education. The Traditional school pipeline is an option that Denise Hageman, an attendance clerk at Greathouse/Shryock Traditional Elementary School who lived in Hikes Point for 16 years, sent her daughters through. “It was the high expectations and focus on rule-following that drew me. It was like having a private school that I didn’t have to pay for.” Located in the Hikes Point neighborhood, it’s a magnet school that promotes rigorous academic and student conduct standards. Qualified applicants are chosen from a pool via lottery. They can continue the pipeline at Barret Traditional Middle School before finishing at Louisville Male High School. All three traditional schools earn an A-minus or higher on Niche and boast high test scores as well as an academic focus on STEM classes.Nearby events offer plenty to do
Hikes Point itself is not a hub of neighborhood events – the residential streets don’t offer the space. Nearby Jeffersontown makes up for it, though, and many residents travel those few minutes east for seasonal community fun. One of the most popular events is the annual Gaslight Festival, an eight-day street festival that takes over J-Town's Gaslight Square each September. Festivities include a motorcycle rally, parade, 5K run, live entertainment and commercial booths for residents to peruse, all wrapped up by the festival car show.Access to Louisville, Jeffersontown and the Kentucky countryside
Wedged in the nook of the Watterson Expressway and I-64, Hikes Point’s proximity to the greater Louisville area and access to major highways is a major draw. Locals travel 10 miles into Downtown Louisville without too much hassle, or 5 miles down Taylorsville Road to Jeffersontown and its industrial parks. Louisville International Airport is an 8-mile drive on I-264. While most residents rely on cars for transportation, bus service is available at stops lining Taylorsville Road. Walking and biking are also an option, thanks to the quiet side streets and thorough sidewalk infrastructure.Centralized shopping options
McMahan Plaza is home to familiar national retailers like T.J. Maxx, HomeGoods and Big Lots, as well as a recently upgraded Kroger’s grocery store. National chain eateries like Taco Bell and Starbucks populate many of the storefronts and free-standing spots. Still, residents often seek out local options like Shark’s Seafood, a popular spot known for their catfish, whiting and other ocean dwellers in dinners and sandwich form. Plenty of international spots include Lemongrass Café and Oriental Café, both offering tastes of Asia, while Taco City Louisville is a popular casual sit-down option for Mexican fare and drinks. For something light and quick, hungry residents can swing through the drive-thru at Soupy’s and choose from an array of homemade soups, sandwiches and salads. If that’s not enough, Mall St. Matthews is just down the road - “For the young kids, it’s a draw – when my kids were younger they would go there,” says Nicholson. The heart of Kentucky’s healthcare
Close enough for residents to walk or bike to work and providing 24-hour emergency care, numerous hospitals sit just north of the neighborhood. They’re a great asset to the area, says Nicholson. “Not just for St. Mathews either,” she goes on, “But for Louisville in the east end as a whole.” With Baptist Health Louisville, Norton Healthcare St. Matthews and the University of Louisville Medical Center East, along with associated and independent practices and clinics, all within moments of each other, it’s one of the state's most condensed centers of healthcare.
