The Meriwether neighborhood lies just south of downtown Louisville.
Walkable small-town atmosphere
A small residential pocket a couple of miles south of downtown Louisville, Meriwether got its start in the 19th century—and the homes maintain this old-school feel. East of town in Schnitzelburg and Germantown are many notable restaurants and bars, and to the west is the University of Louisville, bringing thousands of college students to the area. Although the university is close, the walkable neighborhood preserves a small-town atmosphere. “After talking to someone for a while, you’ll notice that you know the same people,” says Steve Minor, a lifetime local and Realtor at RE/MAX Properties East with 23 years of experience in the region.
Shotgun homes and front porches
Wood and vinyl-framed shotgun homes sit close to brick Foursquares and bungalows, some with fenced-in backyards and driveways around the back. “There are a lot of shotgun homes here because the properties used to be taxed based on how wide they were,” says Minor. Sidewalks lead to front porches, where these single-family homes typically range from about 1,000 to 1,500 square feet in size and about $220,000 to $275,000 in price.

For something sweet, locals indulge in sundaes and soft serve at Dairy Del. On the east side of Schnitzelburg and Germantown, locals grab groceries and essentials at Kroger.
