Park Hill

Easy to get around
“It’s right on the bus line, there’s lots of foot traffic there too,” Brooks says, speaking of the Transit Authority of River City (TARC). TARC provides numerous bus routes within and around the neighborhood, with stops every few blocks. That, combined with some walkability and calm streets for bicyclists, helps residents get around without always needing a car. The University of Louisville Hospital Emergency Room and Norton Hospital are both within 3 miles of the neighborhood, and both provide 24-hour emergency care. To the south, Louisville Muhammed Ali International Airport is roughly a 3-mile drive but also accessible via TARC bus.Compact home options with protected parking
“There’s a lot of two-story, one-and-a-half story bungalows… lots of two-story homes with basements,” says Brooks, “It’s a relaxed, residential area.” Park Hill leans heavily towards renters, in duplexes and single-family homes. Shotgun and bungalow style homes are prevalent, sitting on small lots, although three- and four-bedroom two-story homes with colonial revival influence can be found, often with an included driveway or detached garage for off-street parking and storage. One- and two-bedrooms in need of some elbow grease can be found for as low as $20,000, with most move-in ready options starting around $60,000. Two-story and fully-updated three-bedroom bungalows generally fetch from $80,000 to $175,000.Some of the best wings and barbecue in town
One main spot stands out to Brooks – “King’s Fast Food Chicken… everybody heads there, right along Dixie Highway.” It’s one of the big three fried chicken joints in Louisville, with the spicy chicken keel meal a favorite. Not far away, one of the hidden gems in a busy barbecue scene, Louisville Smokers BBQ serves up chicken wings, pulled pork, rib tips and more from their smokers that seem to go around the clock – locals look forward to their pineapple coleslaw in the summertime. When it comes to eating at home, Kroger is located in Lyles Mall, 2 miles away, for picking up the necessities – the mall also features local and national retail shops – and a Save A Lot sits a few blocks south. In the land of bourbon, Park Hill residents support their local makers as the nearby Brough Brothers Distillery is the first African American-owned distillery in Kentucky, and the tasting room is in the heart of the neighborhood.Nearby parks for play and gathering
St. Louis Park, within the neighborhood, is a small park that features a play area and a basketball court. Many residents will make the short walk to nearby Algonquin Park or Victory Park, both of which are larger and offer walking tracks as well as newer basketball courts. Algonquin Park, one of the 17 Olmstead-designed parks in the city, also features tennis courts and a pool, which is under renovations and expected to reopen in 2025. Just south of the neighborhood, Parkhill Community Center offers programming for all ages throughout the year, indoor and out.Jefferson County’s unique choice zone
The unique school choice plan in Jefferson County Public Schools means that students in Park Hill have options where to go to school, depending on the zones they live in. Students across the community may attend the Valley, Jeffersontown, or Seneca zones depending on their address, and this impacts the school choices. Most will start out at Cochran Elementary, while Maupin, Perry, and McFerran Preparatory Academy also serve the students locally – all of these earn a C-minus or higher from Niche. All of them are eligible to head to the Academy at Shawnee Middle School, rated a C by Niche, while most will go to Noe Middle School before moving along to Seneca High, graded A-minus and C-plus respectively. Options within the district – at every level – includes magnet schools that focus on specific areas of study or careers paths, as well as traditional schools that utilize rigid structure to build a learning community.Victory Day in nearby park
Victory Park Day, held in nearby Victory Park the first Saturday of August, brings the community together as local craftspeople, food vendors, and cultural groups get together with the community to celebrate their past and build the community. With Churchill Downs not too far in the distance, the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Derby Festival that surrounds it is a draw for residents across the city.Neighborhood watch presence
A strong neighborhood watch keeps an eye out around Park Hill, in an effort to work towards improving the CAP Index score of 7 out of 10. While this is moderately above the national average, the score of 10 out of 10 for Homicide is the highest possible score, and Assault with Weapon is close behind with a 9 out of 10.
