Lower Turkeyfoot is a township within Somerset County that features the Ursina and Confluence boroughs, miles of rolling green hills and forested areas. People come into town to stay at local bed and breakfasts before heading out to explore popular destinations nearby. Mona Tissue is a resident of Confluence whose family roots go back to her great-grandfather, who founded Tissue Farm in town. She continues to live in the area and is a driving force behind the Turkeyfoot Valley Historical Society. “Tourism is the biggest reason people come here,” Tissue says. “We have the Greater Allegheny Passageway Trail, Youghiogheny Dam and the lake. Most people who move here come down from Pittsburgh to retire. It's a lovely town that’s close to all kinds of recreation.” Those who call the township home live in the company of small businesses, picturesque views and history.

Monthly farmers market and flower farms
Somerset County is known for its maple syrup, and the Sechler Shack has been tapping, processing and bottling maple syrup since 1850. The family business continues to operate and sell goodies during the monthly Confluence Farmers Market in Confluence Town Square Park. Vendors from across the county set up tables on the grass and local musicians play in the gazebo. “People really like the farmers market, and we open the historical society for an indoor yard sale,” Tissue says. “We also do a pumpkin patch the first weekend of October.” Salt + Light Flower Farm hosts events like paint nights and candle-making sessions where visitors can pick flowers from the farm and create unique crafts as a group. Mallory Sechler, owner of Salt + Light, says, “Being very rural and somewhat isolated, we see some locals at our farm, but most of our customers travel from neighboring counties and even states to attend our events and participate in our subscription services.” Across the street, the United Community Church of God serves the township.
Shopping and dining in Confluence
Most residents head to Confluence for shopping and dining. Park Square Market offers specialty groceries like gluten-free and organic products, while Confluence Foodmart has more everyday needs. River's Edge Cafe Bed & Breakfast provides guests a complimentary breakfast, but anyone can stop by the 1890s home to grab a bite for lunch or dinner. Lucky Dog Café is another popular restaurant in Confluence that’s open from April to October, with a menu full of wraps, salads and street tacos. Those closer to Ursina meet up with friends at The Yough Roadhouse Bar & Grille.

Older homes surrounded by nature
Less than 200 homes fill the township, and very few go on the market each year. Ursina has Colonial Revivals, bungalows and ranch homes built anywhere from the 1880s to the early 2000s, and they sell between $125,000 and $250,000. Confluence has a more active market, though homes usually take two months to sell. Many are Colonial Revivals, ranch homes and Craftsman four squares, ranging from $75,000 to $250,000. Most of Lower Turkeyfoot is farmland and forests, with homes spread out along Draketown Road. Because the area is so rural, homes in the township operate on well water and sewer tank systems.

Closer to home, the Great Allegheny Passage, more commonly known as the GAP Trail, stays busy with cyclists of all experience levels pedaling along the path to Confluence or down and back to the parking lot. Driving down Listonburg Road
The Turkeyfoot Regional Baptist Church was founded in 1775 and still stands off Jersey Hollow Road, though the services ceased over five years ago. Those who drive down the road to Ursina can pass this monument, which stands as a reminder of the township’s origin. Park Street in Ursina leads to Confluence and up to Ohiopyle State Park. Draketown Road flows down to Confluence. Drivers can take back roads 33 miles west to Uniontown, but using Listonburg Road down to Interstate 40 is quicker. Those who live close to the Youghiogheny River watch for torrential rain, which can raise the river and cause roads to flood.
