1,400-plus homes in Kenmar
Kenmar is one of the largest residential areas in Loyalsock, with rows of ranch homes, Cape Cods and Colonial Revivals covering most of the neighborhood. Houses typically have small front yards and slightly larger, fenced-in backyards. Tree cover is heaviest south of Lincoln Drive and on the streets near Williamsport County Club. Prices for three-bedroom homes start around $150,000, with four- and five-bedroom houses selling for as much as $385,000. Penn Vale Apartments, a public housing community, occupies part of the neighborhood’s northwest side.Williamsport Country Club, riverside hikes and more
Parks on the south end of Kenmar let visitors explore the banks of the West Branch Susquehanna River. Riverfront Park is an open field with a walking path along the water. Canfield Island Heritage Park was once the site of a major archeological dig of Native American artifacts that brought a deeper understanding of the area’s original inhabitants. On the east side is Williamsport Country Club, where members have access to dining, swimming and, of course, golf. The course, first laid out in 1909, takes players through 18 holes of rolling hills and mountain views. Emmanuel Baptist Church began holding services off Four Mile Drive in the 1950s. The church is known for its buses that pick up passengers, particularly kids and teenagers on their way to children’s church, from across the neighborhood and even in the city of Williamsport. “Every Sunday morning for 60 years, we’ve run church buses through the community,” Bixler says. “We’ve brought in thousands of young people over the years.” There’s also Hope Community Church, a nondenominational congregation.Unique approach to science in Loyalsock Township School District
Students are zoned to Donald E. Schick Elementary School, graded a B-plus by Niche. Schick Elementary uses the Full Option Science System, a method of teaching that emphasizes learning through experimentation from an early age. The goal is to equip kids with the ability to analyze problems independently, preparing them for college and careers. Older students can go to A-minus-rated Loyalsock Township Middle School and Loyalsock Township High School, scored a B-plus. Emmanuel Baptist Church opened Williamsport Christian School in 1971. The private school has about 75 students, Bixler says. Niche doesn’t assign Williamsport Christian School a grade.Across the river from the Little League World Series
Don Waltman’s Market House Meats & Deli hosts the Sunday Loyalsock Outdoor Market in its parking lot off Northway Road monthly from April to October. Coffee trucks, butchers and bakers are among the 20 vendors who set up at the market. Youth baseball teams from across the country, and often around the world, play the Little League World Series about 4 miles away in South Williamsport. The August tournament brings up to half a million people to the region, creating a mix of fanfare and congestion.Bike trail, buses connect to downtown
Drivers can get on Interstate 180 from the neighborhood, taking it 25 miles southeast to connect to Interstate 80. The latter highway stretches across Pennsylvania. Interstate 180 and railroad tracks run parallel to each other on the south side of the neighborhood, but The Golden Strip acts as a buffer between these noisy transportation routes and houses. Cyclists can take a bike trail that starts at Riverfront Park to downtown Williamsport. River Valley Transit Authority buses run between Loyal Plaza shopping center in Kenmar and downtown Williamsport.Taking a shopping trip down the Golden Strip
Stores, chain restaurants and sometimes cars are jammed close together on Loyalsock Township’s segment of East 3rd Street, known as the Golden Strip. People across the Williamsport area use the Golden Strip to run errands, buying groceries from Giant supermarket, shopping at T.J. Maxx and filling up at Sheetz without driving more than a mile. There are also more than 20 restaurants; most are national chains such as Texas Roadhouse and Arby’s, but Dolly’s Diner is a local concept owned by Loyalsock Township High School basketball coach Ron Insinger, the winningest high school basketball coach in Pennsylvania history. The commercial strip offers convenience, but it’s known for traffic back-ups. Drive-through lines sometimes spill out onto East 3rd Street, clogging lanes and slowing traffic.
