Close-knit North Lubbock neighborhood

Set on Lubbock’s north side, Arnett Benson is home to two elementary schools, parks, community centers, local restaurants and several houses of worship. “I think that's what makes Arnett Benson unique,” Councilwoman Christy Martinez-Garcia says of the close-knit, predominantly Hispanic community. “Because people know each other, they still talk to each other. They still connect with each other through church and through schools, and I think that speaks volumes of the neighborhood and the families that live within them.” Homes are mostly smaller midcentury ranch-style houses, and some have become popular as rentals, as the Texas Tech University campus is located just to the south.

A community center in neighborhood’s Rodgers Park

Rodgers Park is the neighborhood’s main recreational area. Along with a new splash pad, basketball court and walking path, the park is home to the Maggie Trejo Supercenter. Named after Lubbock's first Hispanic councilmember, the community center has a free fitness area, a senior center and an afterschool program. It also hosts city events like the summer Movies in the Park and Halloween Carnival Drive-Thru. Nearby is an outpost of the Boys & Girls Club, called 15 & Mahomies, which offers afterschool programs like homework help and various sports. Maedgen Park, next to McWhorter Elementary School, is an open green space with a small climbing area for kids. Across U.S. Route 82, which runs along the southern edge of Arnett Benson, is Jones AT&T Stadium. Home to the Texas Tech Red Raiders football team, the stadium comes alive on Saturdays in the late summer and fall. "When we were kids, we used to sit on top of our houses because Jones Stadium would illuminate the neighborhood," Martinez-Garcia recalls. Houses of worship in the neighborhood include Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Vamos a Pescar: "Let's go Fishing" event

Less than a mile north of Arnett Benson, Buddy Holly Lake Recreation Area is stocked with catfish and open space to stroll along the waterfront. For the last 15 years, the lake has hosted the Vamos a Pescar fishing event, taking place in summer. Thousands attend the free family-friendly event and try to reel in the big one. Martinez-Garcia started it through her nonprofit Los Hermanos Familia. "We use fishing as a hook to bring families together," Martinez-Garcia says.

“Top performing” Wolffarth Elementary

Students in Arnett Benson can start at two neighborhood schools: McWhorter Elementary, rated B-minus on Niche, or the B-rated Wolffarth Elementary. “Wolffarth was the top performing school in Lubbock last year,” Martinez-Garcia says. “And I think that speaks volumes considering the socio-economic levels in the neighborhood." Students move on to Cavazos Middle, rated C and Lubbock High, rated A-minus. Lubbock High is known for its diversity and was the first high school in Texas to have a mariachi band as part of its music programming. Arnett Benson is also home to Dupre Academy High School, an alternative school rated C-minus on Niche that offers individualized assistance to students to help them complete their high school education. The neighborhood is also next to Texas Tech University, home to around 40,000 undergraduate students.

Family-owned eateries including Joel's Mexican Restaurant

The family-owned Joel's Mexican Restaurant is a neighborhood spot that’s been around for over two decades and features classics like burritos and enchiladas for breakfast and lunch. Clovis Road runs alongside the community's northern edge and is lined with local eateries. Gonzales Snowcones has been serving takeaway frozen flavored treats since 1973, and Montelongo's Mexican Restaurant has been a North Lubbock favorite for over 50 years, with recipes created from the family cookbook. At Jim Dandy Drive-In, patrons can pull up and get an old-fashioned hamburger and fries delivered to their cars. There’s a Dollar General on Clovis Road, and nearby in Northtown Plaza is Amigos, a grocery store stocking Mexican staples.

Midcentury ranch-style homes and new-builds

Most homes are modest ranch-style builds dating from the 1940s and 1950s with driveways and the occasional carport or attached garage. Investors have renovated or updated many older homes; some are for sale, while others are for rent. Some new-construction homes dot the streets, with architectural styles consistent with the neighborhood's aesthetics. Prices range from around $65,000 for small one- or two-bedroom houses or fixer-uppers to $170,000 for renovated homes or new-builds. The neighborhood is just north of the Texas Tech University campus, so along its fringes are apartment complexes that cater to students.
