Quiet streets leading to a busy park
Across 34th Street from the Heart of Lubbock, the neighborhood of Clapp Park takes its name from over 100 acres of parkland that sits at the neighborhood's own heart. While the quiet neighborhood itself is a bit humdrum, the park and its numerous facilities are anything but. Residents are content with that dynamic because it offers a quaint lifestyle at home with lots of outdoor activities and educational programming just a short walk away. "It's a pretty quiet neighborhood right off of University Avenue, not far from Tech. It's not a bad area at all," says Realtor Carlos Martinez of Keller Williams Realty. "People go to work and come home in the evening. Nobody really bothers anyone."

Swimming pools, areas for dogs and more at Clapp Park
With a small center lake for morning walks, colorful flowerbeds spanning paved paths, and many recreational amenities, the neighborhood's namesake park is its obvious centerpiece. Clapp Park is among the city's largest and most popular parks, attractive to residents of all ages and interests. "It really depends on who you're asking. There is a lot there and it's a big space for people to be able to go play and walk around," says athletics and aquatics coordinator for Lubbock Parks and Recreation Chase Helms. Arguably, the most unique feature of Clapp Park is Safety City, a small mock town for educational programming at which local children develop a sense of traffic and pedestrian safety. There is even a dog park in the southeast corner of Clapp Park. And across from that is the Clapp Swimming Pool, which gets busy with visitors looking to cool off with cannonballs and water slide runs.

Halloween at Safety City
Events are frequent at Clapp Park. Safety City hosts three annual events, including a Trick-or-Treating event on Halloween and the yearly Bicycle Rodeo, both of which are free to attend. Several other facilities in Clapp Park offer frequent activities. Some visitors go there to watch seasoned green thumbs give demonstrations at the Lubbock Master Gardeners Association's demonstration Garden. Others go to attend junior tennis camps and annual Mardi Gras parties at the Hodges Community Center. The Lubbock Memorial Arboretum hosts a 2nd Saturday program that is free to attend and features a revolving theme each month.
Renovated midcentury ranchers for less
The neighborhood is a flat grid of quiet, wide-open residential streets forming a rigid semicircle around the neighborhood's namesake park. Red cedars and pecan trees loom over the many less-than-a-quarter-acre lots that dapple the wide streets and narrow sidewalks, which are often separated by burnished wood fences. While a small supply of new construction has popped up in the neighborhood, most homes in Clapp Park are single-family ranchers and cottages built during the 1950s and 1970s. Most include design features inseparable from the classic midcentury Texas rancher look, such as stacked stone exteriors and carports covered with corrugated metal. Some homes have not stood the test of time as well as others have. Renovations and investment opportunities are not uncommon in Clapp Park, but so are move-in ready options. Buyers can expect to pay anywhere from $75,000 to $275,000 for a rancher in Clapp Park, which is below average for Lubbock.

Cash-only burgers and Mexican street corn
The outermost roadways surrounding Clapp Park are where residents visit their favorite nearby eateries and shops. Antique and resale stores like Hub City Retailers are ubiquitous throughout Clapp Park, especially along 34th Street, where several stores form a pilgrimage for vintage picking. After poking through shelves of knickknacks, some residents make a pit stop at Mi Linda Michoacana for a mix of foreign and domestic street foods, from Mexican street corn to cheeseburgers. But inventive flavors of ice cream are the real reason locals visit the brightly colored storefront. For a no-frills option, most locals go to the other side of Clapp Park to hit up Bonus Burger, always remembering to bring cash, the only accepted form of payment. For groceries, locals head just outside of the neighborhood to a United Supermarket on Avenue Q.
Car-dependent with some options
Lubbock is a largely car-dependent city. Busy roads and quiet residential streets are wide, flat and straight. While the neighborhood has sidewalks, few crosswalks hamper its walkability somewhat. As an alternative to driving, most of the neighborhood's outermost roads contain bus stops for routes that can be taken across Lubbock.
