On the cusp of Lubbock’s growing southwest corridor, Melonie Park South is a neighborhood that builds on the area’s reputation as one of the city’s classic neighborhoods where tree lined streets complement an eclectic mix of homes. A bit newer than its Melonie Park counterpart north of Loop 289, Cole Whisenhunt, a Realtor with Keller Williams says Melonie Park South has much of the same family-centered experience. “I think Melonie Park South is very similar… They have the same experience of kids running around and going to the pool.” The neighborhood is part of the South Melonie Park Neighborhood Association and features amenities like a clubhouse, outdoor pool and tennis courts in addition to the neighborhood parks that adorn the area.

Homes in Melonie Park South are mostly a collection of Ranch-style homes as well as a smaller number of two-story builds sitting on tree-lined streets with driveways and attached garages. Most homes were built in the 70s and 80s and many have undergone upgrades to keep with the times. “Melonie Park South is going to be a little bit newer and kind of goes into the 80s, but Melanie Park South actually has a pool and HOA and it's a really nice area as well,” says Justin Lowrey, a Realtor with The Whisenhunt Group at Keller Williams. Most homes in Melonie Park South sell for between $250,000 and $350,000.

Exemplary education with an international flair
Students begin at Honey Elementary School, rated A on Niche. Named after two longtime Lubbock educators, Honey Elementary has earned statewide recognition for academic excellence, earning exemplary status eight times and is known for its English as a Second Language programming, with students from 20 different countries. Bill and Ann Miller Park lies in the northern portion of the neighborhood where leisurely strolls on the 1.5 mile walking trail are accompanied by grassy open fields. In the summer residents can pull up a chair and enjoy movies in the park. Visitors can also stop by the pond to cast a line and go fishing. On the southwestern edge of Melonie Park South, Clifford H. Andrews Park is a prime viewing spot for sunsets over the water where a pond is a popular spot for fishing and viewing multiple species of birds. The park also has basketball and volleyball courts for added fun and excitement.

Melonie Park South sits between the Loop and the 82nd Street commercial corridor where a number of shops and restaurants provide plentiful options for residents. People say everything is bigger in Texas: At Buns Over Texas it rings true with the local favorite specializing in large ‘build your own’ burgers with fresh ground beef on hand toasted buns. Melonie Park South is about nine miles south of downtown Lubbock. Loop 289 encircles the city and serves as one of the main commuter highways to help motorists get downtown, where it connects with I-27. For those without a vehicle, Citibus provides service to downtown Lubbock, but expect a 45 minute commute.
