Walkable Lubbock community built on connections
First platted in 1925, Tech Terrace was Lubbock's first designated suburb. Built around Texas Tech University and close to two major hospitals, the neighborhood spans about one square mile and has homes dating back to the 1930s. Lubbock District 3 Councilman David Glasheen, who grew up in Tech Terrace, moved out of the neighborhood but returned for its walkability and diversity of experience. “In the morning on the weekend, we can walk over to the coffee shop and take the kids to go to the bakery,” Glasheen says. “And the brewery is a great place to get a pizza and hang out with people in the neighborhood." Established in 1974, the Tech Terrace UNIT Neighborhood Association hosts regular events to build connections and protect the community’s distinct identity within Lubbock. "It's also a unique mix of ages and kinds of families because you've got Tech students, professors who've been here for 50 years, families, and people who work in the hospitals or downtown," Glasheen says. "So it's a great mix of people to be with around here.”
Historic homes with pride in ownership
Beginning in 1988, one of the crown jewels of Tech Terrace has been its holiday home tour. What started as a way to promote the neighborhood and showcase its distinct charm, the annual fundraiser has morphed into something bigger, attracting people from all over Lubbock and raising money to beautify the community. Longtime Tech Terrace resident Denise Pope has chaired the event three times, with 600 people showing up one year. “The homes are so diverse — a little tiny cottage, a big mansion and everything in between — and they are always surprisingly amazing inside,” she says. “They’re always full of surprises and features. Each and every one is completely different." Lots in Tech Terrace are typically smaller, but homes come with intricate details, from pristine exterior landscaping to delicate stone masonry. While most homes in Tech Terrace are used as rental properties, homes are well-maintained with short-term housing for Texas Tech faculty members and physicians who work at nearby institutions. Older builds can typically be found between 20th and 25th Streets, while the rest of the neighborhood is a collection of bungalows and ranch-style builds. Homes in Tech Terrace typically sell between $200,000 and $350,000.
