About Luther, OK

'A friendly community' along Route 66

Intersected by two major thoroughfares, Interstate 44 and the famed Route 66, Luther showcases Oklahoma’s rural and agricultural roots and provides accessibility to nearby major cities like Edmond and Oklahoma City. The motto of this secluded locale is ‘a friendly community,’ which it displays through its involvement in revitalization efforts, town events and locally owned businesses.

Homes in Luther provide views of woodlands and wide open fields

For some homeowners living along Luther's outskirts, walking onto expansive patios and porches means enjoying views of woodlands, large fields and expansive ponds. Custom builds, new traditional homes and log cabins have been developed on 2 to 11-acre lots. Prices for these remote homes can start around $220,000 and reach $515,000, depending on the amount of land and number of bedrooms. Closer to the heart of Luther, buyers will find a mix of shotgun houses, ranch homes and bungalows. Though the homes are not as secluded, there is still plenty of yard space to roam. Lot sizes in these areas range from a quarter to half-acre and are accentuated by mature trees and shrubbery. Luther's smallest two-bedroom, two-bathroom house is typically listed below $100,000, while a remodeled three-bedroom home is priced around $192,000.

Local eateries and shops line historic Route 66

Local eateries and boutiques are dotted along the main roadways branching off from Route 66. At Our Town Eatery, community spirit is on full display. Luther High School paraphernalia lines the walls of the diner known for its burgers and catfish baskets. It may seem unassuming on the outside, but Rustic Farm has a treasure trove of home décor, antiques, cowboy boots, clothes and Oklahoma-themed gifts lining the shelves inside. There is a Dollar General in town when locals need to make quick stops for snacks and small household items. The closest big box grocery store is a Walmart Supercenter in Edmond, requiring a 15-mile drive along Interstate 44. The same can be said for access to chain retailers like Target, Lowe’s Home Improvement and Ross Dress for Less.

Community efforts underway to revitalize park

Efforts are underway to revitalize Wildhorse Park, which sits off Route 66. The Friends of the Park organization and local businesses are teaming up to bring new life to the playground built in the 1950s. There will be two play areas for kids of different ages. The project will be completed in phases, including an 18-hole disc golf course, a pavilion with basketball courts, walking and biking paths and a pond. A community garden with 3 vegetable beds and a butterfly garden has already been added. Locals can rent the plots and grow their own produce while connecting with neighbors.

Luther Pecan Festival celebrates new harvest season

For six years, town residents and visitors from surrounding areas have descended on South Main Street for the Luther Pecan Festival. The event celebrates the harvest of the pecans at local businesses like Couch Pecan Orchard. The street shuts down for a day of sweet treats, food trucks, a pecan cookoff, live music and dozens of vendors selling artwork and handmade gifts. In 2023, the event kicked off with a 5K run and walk that also celebrated Luther’s 125th anniversary.

Car-dependent community with access to Route 66

Luther’s secluded location puts it out of reach of public transit, making it a car-dependent community. Locals can travel roughly 17 miles west along Route 66 to reach Edmond. The city is also the site of the closest hospital. Residents needing access to medical services can visit the INTEGRIS Health Edmond Hospital. Commuters working in downtown Oklahoma City will need to make the roughly 27-mile trip along Interstate 44, which sits south of Luther. Locals looking to take a vacation can drive 36 miles southwest to Will Rogers World Airport.

'Rock of Ages' station

Take a step back in time by driving less than 5 miles west of town along Route 66 to see the ruins of an old Conoco service station. Legend has it the roofless stone building actually predates the iconic thoroughfare, built between 1915 and 1920. Known to locals as the Rock of Ages Station, in its heyday, it had two fuel pumps and oil drums, and on days when the iceman came by, people could pick up a cold soda.
