A small, established suburb next to Liberty University

College Park is a small neighborhood that sits next to Liberty University’s campus in Lynchburg. While this is a major aspect of the suburb, it attracts more than just students. “It’s a family-oriented area that’s affordable,” says Aaliya Robertson, a lifelong Lynchburg resident. “I was actually looking for a home and considered the area because the prices are decent and there are good starter homes.” There are also many good schools nearby, including Sandusky Elementary and Middle School, Robertson says. College Park is a mature, historic neighborhood that’s been established for a long time, says Martin Donovan, a Realtor with Lauren Bell Real Estate, who has over 30 years of experience in Lynchburg. “It has a more traditional vibe with the historic homes, which barely have sidewalks or curbs.” Liberty University, the largest private Christian university in Virginia, offers a ton of activities, Donovan says. Also, the college, which includes a medical school, is a large employer for College Park residents.

Shopping and dining along Wards Road

Wards Road is home to many stores including Walmart, Sam’s Club and Target. Other retail options such as Barnes & Noble, Michaels and Kohl’s are also here, along with popular food chains like Zaxby’s, Olive Garden and Golden Corral. “Wards is where all the shopping is. It’s crazy busy all the time,” Donovan says. Market on Main offers people a place to sit and eat breakfast with friends and family. Macado’s serves a large menu of sandwiches and salads. The restaurant has a touch of Liberty University in the décor — as it sits on the campus — and offers unique memorabilia such as Simpson’s and sports team items. Macado’s also hosts annual parties on St. Patrick’s Day and Halloween.

Skiing year-round at Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre

Instead of walking the neighborhood, residents can walk or hike at the Liberty Mountain Trail System. Heritage Park also has trails and a disc golf course. For traditional golfing, people visit Poplar Forest Golf Course. During the warmer months, the James River is a popular destination for canoeing and kayaking, and the Vista Acres Pool for swimming. Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre, on the university's campus, is open to the public no matter the season. There are also many different sports facilities at Liberty University.

Cape Cods from $250,000

Homebuyers will find Cape Cods with shingle roofs and 1970s brick ranch-style homes ranging from $250,000 to $400,000. Prices typically depend on the number of bedrooms. Most houses have expansive front yards.

Athletics at Heritage High School

Kids can attend Sandusky Elementary School, which earns a B from Niche, before possibly advancing to Sandusky Middle. This school receives a C-plus and hosts an annual cultural arts night. Students may move on to Heritage High School, which has a notable athletic program and earns a B-minus. Children also have the option of attending private school at Liberty Christian Academy, which earns an A-plus from Niche. Liberty University is home to Thomas Road Baptist Church, which has thousands of members. Other churches in the area include Compassion Church of the Nazarene, Beaulah Baptist Church and Providence Church.

Commuting on U.S. 460 or 501

Residents can use U.S. Route 460 or 501 to get around Lynchburg. Commuters can also a public bus service to reach places like the Lynchburg Regional Airport, which is just 2 miles away.

Events at the Vines Center, Williams Stadium

The Vines Center hosts events including college sports, concerts and graduation ceremonies. Williams Stadium is another favored university location, where residents of all ages congregate to watch the Liberty Flames play football or soccer. SeaQuest Lynchburg is a 5-minute drive away, offering interactive exhibits with different marine life. Meanwhile, FunQuest Family Entertainment Center offers activities including laser tag, skating and a large jungle gym.

Important to know

Lynchburg has an extreme risk of flooding — due to the proximity to the James River — but continues to put efforts in place to prevent it. Lynchburg Rising: Beyond Survival to Environmental Justice, a program that started in 2022, offers flood preparation lessons and a space for people to share their experiences regarding flooding.
