Lakeland Lake ties community together
The small community of Lakeland, 8 miles from Downtown Lynchburg, enjoys lakeside living while still being close to major thoroughfares. The neighborhood’s namesake, Lakeland Lake, ties the community together and gives Lakeland a getaway feel. "There are basketball courts, and people can play tennis," says Rikki Cheatham, Realtor with Elite Realty. “ People take kids for little picnics, so the lake is definitely a huge reason why people want to live there.” The lake also allows for fishing and has a dock for swimming. All residents and their guests have access to the lake, but pets are prohibited.
Single-family homes from $200,000
The residential community centers around Lakeland Lake. Wide, winding streets are lined with homes with rolling lawns and long driveways, with the occasional attached garage. Homes were built around 1966 and are in the ranch and minimal traditional styles. They range in price from $200,000 to $330,000.
B-minus rated Heritage High School
Lakeland is served by Lynchburg City Public Schools, which receives a B from Niche. Children may attend Heritage Elementary School and Sandusky Middle School, both of which receive a C-plus. Students advance to Heritage High School, which receives a B-minus. Heritage High School has an in-depth theatre program offering AP courses.
Commuting on U.S. Route 460, and bus stops
“You don’t have a lot of through traffic,” says Cheatham. “If you’re on the road, it means you’re usually there as a resident. People like the low traffic.” The area is car-dependent, and several highways are nearby, including U.S. Routes 460, 29 and 501. Bus stops are just outside the neighborhood along Leesville Road for public transportation. The Lynchburg Regional Airport is 3 miles away.
LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center and Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre
The most popular park in the area is Lakeland Lake, which has a jungle gym and hard-top sports courts surrounded by greenery. LaHaye Recreation & Fitness Center has an indoor soccer field and track area for indoor recreation. The center also has dance and training studios as well as a year-round ice skating rink. Skiing and snowboarding are offered at the Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre.
Shopping and dining on Timberlake Road and Wards Road
Cheatham says residents here are close to shopping in downtown Lynchburg. “But a lot of people go more towards the malls where Liberty University is. On Timberlake, there are restaurants close by, coffee shops, and hair salons.” Along Wards Road are shopping malls with stores including Target and Walmart. Bordering Timberlake Road is a Kroger, along with strip malls, retailers and chain restaurants like La Carreta and Biscuitville. Near Lakeland, Gary’s Garden Center, a small family-owned community flower shop, lets residents purchase plants to decorate their garden, house or vegetable patch. “We’re a retail garden center with a good selection of house plants and vegetables,” says Nelson Garner, one of the store's managers and owners. “We provide some of the churches in the area with flowers during the holidays. We also allow The Hope Company church to use our parking lot for overflow parking on Sundays.” Other churches in the community include the Berean Baptist of Lynchburg and Heritage United Methodist Church.
Putt-Putt Fun Center and SeaQuest
The Putt-Putt Fun Center provides activities for all ages, from miniature golf to laser tag. The center also has go-karts and an arcade. Residents especially enjoy the pizza at the café and can rent out the space for birthday parties or special events. SeaQuest is an interactive chain aquarium and zoo where residents may feed and visit with the animals, including Flash, the two-toed sloth.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
