A hilly, family-oriented area in Lynchburg

Richland Hills was developed in the 1950s after Lynchburg entrepreneur Samuel Miller established his residence here and left it to his next of kin, the Nelson family. The family expanded around the home, and that created the Richland Hills that exists today. Richland Hills is known for its walkable, hilly streets and closeness to public schools. “I grew up here as a kid for about 10 years. It’s a good, quiet little area,” says Aaliya Robertson, a local who was raised in Lynchburg. “Families flock here, and typically, they pass their homes down generations.” The neighborhood attracts younger families since it's right next to Heritage Elementary and Heritage High, Robertson says. People can walk their children to school in the morning. “It’s very hilly, but it’s walkable. My mom and I used to walk the neighborhood a lot,” says Robertson. The area also caters to drivers, as it sits conveniently close to U.S. Route 460.

Richland Hills’ prominent home style is brick ranch-style homes costing between $200,000 and $350,000, depending on the number of bedrooms. “It is an affordable area for first-time homebuyers,” says Sabrina Tomlin, a Realtor with NextHome TwoFourFive who was born and raised in Lynchburg. “I've sold a few homes here and most of them were first-timers.” Most homes sit on hills and have manicured lawns, wooded backyards and carports instead of garages. Getting around the neighborhood on foot is hard, since its very hilly, but it’s doable.
