A sought-after riverfront suburb in Lynchburg
Riverside is straightforward in its name, as it sits right beside the James River. It’s also next to Randolph College, which helps its popularity. “It’s very established,” says Martin Donovan, a Realtor with Lauren Bell Real Estate, who has over thirty years of experience in the area. “Riverside is a historical area that still acknowledges its history with its homes and landmarks. It’s a quaint part of town.” The proximity to Randolph attracts a younger demographic, says Sabrina Tomlin, a Realtor with NextHome TwoFourFive who has lived in Lynchburg her entire life. “A lot of people are typically in their 20s to 30s,” she says. “I notice many college students like to walk to get around town.” But according to Tomin, the biggest attraction is the river. “People like to go out there for all types of activities like tubing,” she says.
Rivermont Pizza is a popular dive bar offering great food and drinks in Riverside.
Dining at local dive bars
Most shopping and dining destinations sit along Rivermont Avenue. The Cavalier Store, known to locals as "The Cav," is a popular cash-only burger joint with cozy, wooden booths. Seating is limited since and place is so popular. Residents know they’ve reached Rivermont Pizza when they see the bright red door on Rivermont Avenue. This spot has a dive-bar vibe, large beer menu and friendly prices. Most people shop for groceries at Kroger, which is just 2 miles away on Boonsboro Road. There’s also a farmers market in downtown Lynchburg, the Lynchburg Community Market, which sells fresh produce, homemade bread, and other locally sourced foods and items.
Some Riverside homes rest atop a hill overlooking the James River.
Walking along the James River
Riverside Park takes up an entire corner of the neighborhood. It’s a large green space with a playground, basketball courts and walking trails. “It has a unique trail that leads to a train track. It’s really cool,” says Donovan. “I like to walk my dogs along the trails almost every morning.” The park also has a splash pad in the summer and borders the James River, which is another popular place to go in the warmer months. The Oakwood Country Club is just a mile, or a 3-minute drive, away.
