A family-friendly suburb near Liberty University

Sheffield is a larger suburb in Lynchburg that’s known for its namesake school, Sheffield Elementary School, and its closeness to Liberty University. “It’s a unique area because it brings all different types of people, due to the nearby college,” says Martin Donovan, a Realtor with Lauren Bell Real Estate, who has over thirty years of experience in the area. “Sheffield has good schools, affordable home prices and a strong community. It’s a great place to call home.” In September and October, residents highly anticipate and come together at Smith’s Pumpkin Patch, which is run by a local family. It’s a perfect place for family outings or date nights and offers activities such as face painting and hayrides. “It’s a nice little event for the kids to play,” says Sabrina Tomlin, a Realtor with NextHome TwoFourFive who has lived in Lynchburg her whole life. “My grandchildren always liked going there when they were young.”

Most errands can be done on Wards Road at the Chestnut Hills Shopping Center, which includes a Kroger, CVS Pharmacy and a laundromat. Chestnut Hill Bakery offers an extensive dessert menu and also sits in the center, along with Milan Indian Cuisine, a popular eatery. Choice Hibachi Buffet also sits on the main road and has a large menu of both Chinese and American cuisine. Next door is the River Ridge Mall, where people can casually shop or visit the movie theatre inside.

Tractor rides at Smith’s Pumpkin Patch

SeaQuest Lynchburg is in River Ridge Mall. Here, people can walk through immersive exhibits such as the Great Wall of China and Icelandic villages. Smith's Pumpkin Patch is the place to be during the fall season. It includes spooky bouncy houses, a corn maze and local vendors that sell things ranging from homemade bread to handmade pottery. And of course, pumpkins and gourds of all sizes are also on sale. Williams Stadium—located on Liberty’s campus—is a popular place during football season, as it has nearly 20,000 seats.

In Sheffield, potential homebuyers will mostly find brick ranch-style homes that range from $180,000 to $300,000. Homes are spaced closely together and have decent-sized yards that lead to small sidewalks for daily jogs or dog walks. Depending on the proximity, some people can walk their children to the nearby Sheffield Elementary School.

Sheffield Elementary School, Liberty Christian Academy

Children can attend Sheffield Elementary School, which earns a B-minus from Niche, before possibly moving on to Sandusky Middle School, which receives a C-minus and hosts “Family Film on the Field” nights where students can watch movies outside with a side of free popcorn. The nearby Heritage High School earns a B-minus and was renovated in 2017 with a $74 million budget that went into fixing decades of structural issues, a new student parking lot and state-of-the-art football and baseball fields. Students also have the option of private schooling at Liberty Christian Academy, which earns an A-minus from Niche. Central Virginia Community College and Liberty University both border the neighborhood. Thomas Road Baptist Church is a popular place of worship on Liberty’s campus that welcomes thousands of members weekly. Sheffield residents also attend Quaker Memorial Presbyterian and Compassion Church of the Nazarene.

Playing disc golf at Heritage Park

Heritage Park is known for its disc golf course and walking trails, while nearby Sandusky Park has picnic areas and a large soccer field. Liberty University’s gym is open to the public but charges a $10 membership fee for non-students. People can also rent out time at the college’s sports facilities such as the aquatic center and indoor soccer field.

Reaching downtown via Route 501

People hop on U.S. Route 501 or use the public bus service to get around the area and reach downtown Lynchburg, which is 6 miles away. Lynchburg Regional Airport is 3 miles away.

Important to know

While Lynchburg has an overall extreme risk of flooding—due to the proximity of the James River—Sheffield only has a moderate risk.
