Taking flight in Tyreeanna
Local pilots soar over open green spaces dotted with homes and government buildings. A short distance away, a tangle of roadways and buildings appear, marking the Lynchburg business district. Pilots touch down at Falwell Airport, the most prominent establishment in the otherwise rural landscape of Tyreeanna, 3 miles outside downtown Lynchburg. “Clavin Falwell had an interest in flying; that’s how it got started,” says Rodger Beck, owner of the McLaren Corporation at Falwell Airport and a local. “It was in the family until 2013 when I got it from them.” In 2009, Liberty University purchased Falwell Aviation for its aeronautics program and Rodger Beck, through the McLaren Corporation, operates the airport. Calvin Falwell and his brother, Lawrence, founded the airport in 1946. The brothers were involved in many business ventures in central Virginia, including the Truck Body Corporation and Falwell Corporation, which still provides central and western Virginia with water filtration, plumbing, water treatment and water distribution. The brothers were cousins of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, who founded Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University in Lynchburg.
The Falwell airport is utilized for training classes and regional flights.

Single-family homes from $180,000
The area has no sidewalks, and small collections of homes are set along winding roads surrounded by oak, tulip poplar and beech trees. Most of the homes are near Pleasant Valley Road. Ranch-style houses range from $180,000 to $200,000, while Cape Cod and Colonial Revival homes range from $220,000 to $470,000. The city of Lynchburg created a plan in 2022 to further develop Tyreeanna and encourage growth. The plan proposed more variety in housing for all income levels, including townhouses, duplexes and mobile homes.

Traveling on Richmond Highway, Campbell Avenue, U.S. Route 29
While Tyreeanna has no sidewalks or public transportation, that's set to change with the city’s plan for the neighborhood. Existing streets and new streets will have sidewalks wide enough for pedestrians and bicyclists. Residents are car-dependent and use the Richmond Highway, Campbell Avenue and U.S. Route 29 to travel around the area. The Lynchburg Regional Airport is 8 miles away. Residents near Falwell Airport may hear planes taking off, but it is relatively quiet since the aircraft are limited to single engines.
Tyreeanna quickly connects to the rest of Virginia on route 501 and route 29.
Route 460 rapidly connect Lynchburg to Roanoke.

Shopping and dining on Wards Road
“People go to Wards Road, Campbell Avenue, not so much,” says Beck. “Route 460, that’s typically where people will go. Walmart and the Sam’s Club is a very close commute.” Wards Road goes by River Ridge Mall, which has a popular Mexican restaurant, Papa Gallo, and Kroger nearby for grocery shopping. Residents visit Tempelton’s Market, a convenience store off Richmond Highway, for a quick grocery run. Religious services are held at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church and Tyreeanna Chapel.

Events through Hill City Gardeners
The Hill City Master Gardeners have a help desk in the Lynchburg Agricultural office within Tyreeanna and host gardening events throughout the year. They also offer home visits for those dealing with immobile flora, such as trees. The collection of highly trained gardeners works with local schools to teach students about gardening and give them hands-on experience. More parks and fitness facilities are proposed for the area, including turning the former Lynchburg landfill into a destination park with off-leash areas, walking trails, a playground and other amenities. “Smith Mountain Lake is not too far away,” says Beck. “So, if you have a boat, people head up there.” The state park is about an hour away and offers boat and cabin rentals. The lake is stocked with catfish and a variety of bass among other fish.

Storing planes and flight training at Falwell Airport
Falwell Airport is privately owned and open to the public. It offers pilots a place to store their single-engine aircraft. Liberty University uses the airport for pilot and instrument training. “Their flight school started over here, but it got too big,” says Beck. The flight school is now based at Freedom Aviation in Campbell County. Many Liberty University students wanting to get commercial or military training hours join Beck’s 3 Amigos Flight Club.
