Ample space in Winston Ridge
Winston Ridge, 2 miles from downtown Lynchburg, is a spacious suburban and industrial neighborhood with easy access to downtown amenities. “It can be very quiet, and homes can be pretty spaced apart,” says Steven Halloren, Realtor with Keller Williams. “It’s an area where you've got lots of space.” The James River borders the area, giving way to a small industrial section housing the CSX Lynchburg Yard and the Water Resources Recovery Facility, which has there since 1958. “All of the wastewater from the city and surrounding area is treated here,” says Jason Snyder, the Public Information Officer with the Lynchburg Water Resources Department. “We treat an average of 12 million gallons of wastewater per day. It’s a twenty-four-seven operation. We need people here to manage how much is coming in and going out. We treat solids and repurpose biosolids to be used on local farms.” Treated and sanitized wastewater is pumped back into the James River. “The facility deals a lot with incoming stormwater and wastewater, treats all of it and returns it to the James cleaner than the river itself,” says Snyder. While the facility runs nonstop, it is a relatively quiet operation, with little to no noise loud enough to disturb its residential neighbors. The area is also home to the Lynchburg Detention Center.

Important to know
The CSX Lynchburg Yard, used by freight trains, borders the neighborhood. “I helped a client sell a home over there,” says Halloran. “She was telling me she could hear the train.” Most homes, though. are far from the train tracks. The Water Resources Recovery Facility may occasionally release a musty smell but the facility has an odor control system in place that sucks up most of the odorous air to be treated.
