Nature to the west and a city to the east
Parkland Avenue sits underneath the shadow of a vast forest, with steep streets and dead-end roadways. The neighborhood’s namesake and main artery connects Walnut Street to Broadway and runs along Breeds Pond and many green spaces. A walk across the road could lead to the Lynn Woods Reservation, the second-largest municipal park in the U.S. that borders Parkland Avenue to the west. Just a couple miles to the east lies the cultural festivals, commuter rail station and urban amenities of Downtown Lynn. Parkland Avenue shows a side often overlooked; a version of Lynn where nature is the draw. In Parkland Avenue, an escape to the woods is outside the back door and dining spots and shopping options are right down the road.
Recreation for adults, kids and canines
With Lynn Woods Reservation’s 2,200 acres on the west side of town, nature enthusiasts will find plenty to get excited about, from rocks for bouldering to more than 30 miles of designation pathways. A popular tourist destination here includes Dungeon Rock, a formation thought to be an old pirate grave. Panoramic views of the forest can be seen from the 48-foot Stone Tower, built in 1936. The park’s three reservoirs provide drinking water for Lynn residents, so swimming and boating are not permitted. “There are mountain biking trails from novice to expert, some of the nicest and cleanest waterways in the state, and great walking and hiking trails,” says Albert DiVirgilio, a lifelong Lynn resident and broker/owner with RE/MAX 360. Pups know Parkland as “Barkland,” due to the Barkland Avenue Dog Park, a play area for friendly canines registered with the city. Frey Playground and Gallagher Park’s jungle gyms, athletic fields and courts provide more outdoor community gathering spaces right outside of the neighborhood.
Eateries and stores around Parkland Avenue
While Downtown Lynn features a thriving food scene under 2 miles away, a few spots lie within walking distance of Parkland Avenue. Walnut Street Café offers coffee, breakfast and club sandwiches, accompanied by the occasional live music performance. Nickey’s and Fauci’s pizzerias off of Lynnfield Street have collectively served Lynn with Italian fare for almost 100 years. To catch a game or grab a drink, Lazy Dog Sports Bar and Rolly’s Tavern on the Square are off Broadway. Groceries can be purchased under 2 miles away at Stop & Shop, while Target and Walmart are also within 5 miles.
Residences dominate Parkland Avenue landscape
Houses built in the late 1800s and early 1900s make up most of Parkland Avenue’s market. Split levels, ranch styles and Capes are most common, along with other single-family builds with vinyl siding and shingle roofs. Home prices often fall between $500,000 and $650,000, while large multifamily properties can climb into the $700,000 to $800,000 threshold. While sidewalks line some residential streets, modest front lawns typically fan out all the way to the road. Off-street parking is common, as most properties have driveways or garages.
Public and private education near Parkland Avenue
Public schools close to Parkland Avenue include William R. Fallon Elementary, Breed Middle and Lynn Classical High School, which all have C grades on Niche. These three public institutions sit within a few miles of most residences. Private options like North Shore Christian School, which earns an A-plus, and St. Mary’s Lynn, with a B-plus, are also popular for primary and secondary years. “Massachusetts is known for private education, and the North Shore certainly does not skimp,” DiVirgilio says.
Transportation and accessibility to other facilities
Parkland Avenue is within 5 miles of major thoroughfares, including Routes 1 and 107 into Boston, as well as Interstate 95. Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (T) buses stop along Lynnfield Street and Broadway, and the Lynn station is about 3 miles away. The 13-mile ride into Boston’s North Station on the commuter rail can take under 30 minutes to an hour. Boston Logan International Airport sits about 10 miles south via Route 107. Trips outside of town are not necessary for houses of worship, as Christian churches and the Congregation Ahabat Sholom are within about 3 miles, while the Masjid Alsalam-Islamic Society of the North Shore lies within the neighborhood. Salem Hospital serves as the closest major health care facility, about 4.5 miles up Route 107.
