Charming vintage homes for putting down roots
Homes in Pine Hill include single-family colonials, shingle and ranch-style homes, and larger multi-unit properties situated on modest lots and sidewalk-lined streets. Many homes date back to the late 19th and early 20th century, producing a sense of living history throughout the neighborhood. "You're starting to see a lot of people adding to the smaller, older homes because once people move here, they don't want to leave," Cronin says. "That's what we did. We didn't want to move from Pine Hill, so we added a second story to our home and turned it from a one-level ranch to a two-level colonial." Cronin's family aren't the only neighborhood residents who choose to plant deep roots in Pine Hill. "It can be hard to get in this neighborhood," Cronin says. "There's not a lot of turnover. Some people have been here for 30, 40, 50 years." Pine Hill home sizes range from around 900 to 3,400 square feet, and prices span from $390,000 for a two-bed single family needing some TLC to $920,000 for a triplex with a renovated owner's unit.Neighborhood park where neighbors gather
In addition to the nearby Lynn Woods Reservation, a 2,200-acre forest park crisscrossed by over 30 miles of multi-use trails, Pine Hill residents also enjoy outdoor time at Gallagher Park, a neighborhood green space with a playground, baseball and multi-use fields, and basketball courts. The park is home to the Pine Hill Little League and, according to Cronin, is a popular spot with the neighbors, and as the League Information Officer and spouse of the league's president, she should know. "Everybody gathers at the park every spring, especially for the baseball games. If the kids are looking for someone to play with, they go to Gallagher. There's always someone there." Not to be left out of the outdoor fun, Pine Hill's four-legged friends have Barkland Avenue Dog Park, a fenced bit of green space with separate sections for small and large dogs.Well-regarded neighborhood elementary school
Students in the Pine Hill neighborhood attend Lynn Public Schools, including Sewell Anderson Elementary, rated a C by Niche, and Breed Middle, also given a C rating. Older students head to Classical High School, which earns a B-minus. "Sewell Anderson Elementary is a draw to Pine Hill for people with children," Cronin says. "It's one of the top elementary schools in Lynn."Annual community festivities
The Pine Hill Neighborhood Civic Association has a long history of bringing neighbors together through events like a Fourth of July parade, a Halloween costume parade and trunk-or-treat, and a lively fall craft fair. In November, Pine Hill residents join the wider Lynn community in Central Square for the town's Festival of Lights, a tree and menorah lighting ceremony featuring student performances, hot chocolate, and lots of holiday cheer.Accessible transport links to Boston
Many Pine Hill residents own cars and commute to work, some making the 13-mile drive along Route 1 into downtown Boston. For those who prefer to leave the driving to others, there are several Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority bus stops across Lynn, and the Market Square at Western Avenue light rail station is about a half-mile from Pine Hill.Long-standing local hang-outs
For a bite to eat and a drink with friends, locals enjoy snagging a booth or cozying up to the bar at The Lido Café, a popular neighborhood hang-out specializing in pizza and seafood. Residents looking for a caffeine pick-me-up, a poetry reading or some live music will find it all at the Walnut Street Coffee Café, and Tony's Pub & Grill is a neighborhood staple and a top spot to catch a Red Sox or Patriots game while enjoying a cold beer and tender steak tips, a New England favorite. "Tony's was started by a Pine Hill resident over 50 years ago," Cronin says. "They have the very best French onion soup around." Pine Hill-area residents needing to pick up ingredients for dinner at home or do a weekly pantry restock will find what they're looking for at the neighborhood Stop & Shop or nearby Market Basket grocery stores.
