Farmland and highways surrounding Kutztown
Maxatawny Township was first settled in 1720 as a farming community, and remnants of that historic agrarian society remain today. Sprawling stretches of fields and pastures connect the small residential hubs of Lyons, Bowers and Maxatawny, all surrounding the quaint college town of Kutztown. Residents who settle here, on the outskirts of Kutztown, enjoy access to the close-knit town and its amenities while living more spaciously in homes with generous lots. Plus, farm-fresh food vendors, mountainous outdoor recreation and access to U.S. Route 222 are among some of the benefits of country living in Maxatawny. Some professionals commute to Reading and Allentown, both roughly 20 to 25 miles away, but a couple of major industrial employers are also based in the township.

Residential hubs amid rural land
Homes in Maxatawny Township tend to be situated along rural back roads or clustered in small town centers. Semi-rural mid-20th-century ranch-style homes and cottages are common, with some later New Traditional developments from the early 2000s. One benefit of country living is the extra elbow room, with lot sizes between a quarter-acre and a full acre. While some residents are within shouting distance of their neighbors, others are surrounded by fields and pastures on all sides. While most single-family homes are priced between $200,000 and $500,000, some townhouses and duplexes in the heart of towns, such as Lyons or Bowers, can sell from $125,000 to $275,000.

Farm-fresh food and local eateries along U.S. Route 222
Although retail might be sparse in this rural area, meat and produce almost always come fresh from the farmland. At Renninger’s Antique and Farmer’s Market, residents can stock the fridge while perusing artisan goods and handmade wares. Other family-owned shops, such as Burkholder’s Farm Market, also provide fresh and canned groceries, plus other novelties, while a couple of big-box stores like Giant can be found in Kutztown. Other local spots are scattered throughout the countryside. Along U.S. Route 222, the Shoppes of Premise Maid is a fairy-tale chocolate shop with Tudor-inspired buildings. With its Tudor-inspired buildings and 12-foot-tall nutcracker. Down the road, Firehouse Coffee sells lattes and fresh-roasted grounds out of a fire station-themed building. Plenty of outdoors to explore around Blue Mountain
Located in Bowers, William DeLong Memorial Park is the township’s most robust park. A paved half-mile trail meanders through the mature, shady trees, with a playground and basketball court close by. The Saucony Creek also runs along the park grounds, making it a popular fishing spot. Notably, the park is also the site of the annual Chile Pepper Festival, complete with a jalapeno eating contest and all things spicy. More rugged recreation lies just beyond the township’s borders at the foothills of Blue Mountain and Hawk Mountain, where hunting lands and golf courses are tucked away. "It's a beautiful area," Youst says. "One of the most popular attractions is the nearby access to the Appalachian Trail — a lot of residents hike some of it." At Crystal Cave, school field trips and tourist groups embark on underground tours of centuries-old geological formations, with other attractions such as gemstone panning and mini golf to keep families coming back.
