Bealls Hill Historic District
Neighborhood in Macon-Bibb, Georgia
Bibb County
Restored Victorians and new cottages
New sidewalks, designated on-street parking, post-top lights and trees have helped breathe new life into the neighborhood’s gridded streets. Craftsman-style cottages, bungalows and regal Victorian homes — some dating back to the 1860s — are common. Houses are rehabbed if possible; those beyond repair are deconstructed and their materials are repurposed by a local business partner as part of the city's revitalization efforts, rather than sent to a landfill. New homes are built on empty lots and designed to maintain the architectural integrity of the neighborhood. Incentives like state and federal tax credit programs and down payment assistance for full-time Mercer University employees have helped increase homeownership in the community. Some homes have been divided into duplexes and apartments. Fixer-uppers can range from $40,000 to $115,000. Renovated cottages and shotgun homes can range from $100,000 to $250,000. Prices increase with size and style, ranging from $175,000 to $300,000 for a larger renovated bungalow, duplex or Queen Anne home. Like-new homes built in the early 2010s range between $160,000 and $265,000. Large historic houses of more than 2,500 square feet range from $300,000 to $380,000.Walking distance to Tattnall Square Park
One of the neighborhood's biggest perks is its proximity to parks, museums and entertainment. Residents often walk or bike to neighboring Tattnall Square Park, a popular spot for relaxation, whether that be a quiet stroll on the park’s paved paths, sitting by the fountain or reading under the gazebo. There are also pickleball courts, playgrounds and a soccer field. Carolyn Crayton Park is 2 miles east and has a skate park, picnic shelters and playgrounds. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, about 3.5 miles east across the Ocmulgee River, is the site of more than 12,000 years of continuous human habitation and is poised to become Georgia’s first National Park. Closer to home are the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame and the Tubman Museum, which houses exhibits showcasing African American history, art and culture.Alexander II Elementary School recognized for excellence
Beall’s Hill Historic District is home to Alexander II Elementary Magnet School, a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence recipient that receives a B-minus from Niche. Children living in the neighborhood can register for the school without entering the lottery system. Miller Fine Arts Magnet Middle School receives a C, as does Central High School. The high school offers fine arts programming and the International Baccalaureate Program, a rigorous curriculum designed to prepare students for higher education. Mound de Sales Academy is an A-plus private Catholic middle and high school teaching students in grades 5-12.Beall's Hill events include an Easter egg hunt
The Beall’s Hill Neighborhood Association operates a community garden and schedules seasonal events, such as an Easter egg hunt and holiday parties, as well as cookouts, porch parties and community cleanups. Residents walk or bike to events in Downtown Macon like First Fridays, a monthly event with live music, food and an art crawl. Each March, Macon is transformed into a pink paradise as more than 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees bloom, and thousands flock to Carolyn Crayton Park for the annual International Cherry Blossom Festival.Next door to Mercer University, Atrium Health Navicent
In addition to restoring homes, the Historic Macon Foundation and its partners painted crosswalks and added speed awareness signs on Oglethorpe Street to improve pedestrian safety. Mercer University and Atrium Health Navicent are on either side of the neighborhood. Downtown Macon is less than a mile away, and Macon Downtown Airport is 6.5 miles east of the river. The neighborhood is close to Interstate 75, connecting to Atlanta, about 80 miles north, and I-16, leading to Savannah, about 165 miles east. Macon-Bibb Transit Authority also has several stops nearby, including Mercer University, Mercer Village and Tattnall Square Park.Soul food staples at The Bear’s Den
The Bear’s Den, a cozy cafeteria-style lunch spot with a daily rotating menu of soul food staples like fried chicken, collard greens and banana pudding, is an easy walk. Nearby Mercer Village, on the edge of the Mercer University campus, is home to shops and restaurants like Francar’s Wings, a small joint specializing in chicken wings. Yollah, a self-proclaimed social kitchen and garden, serves up Latin fare with Southern flair using ingredients from local farms. Residents can pick up fresh produce and other goods at the weekly Napier Heights Food Co-Op in Tattnall Square Park or grab groceries at Family Supermarket about 2 miles south of the neighborhood.Community gatherings at Centenary United Methodist Church
Centenary United Methodist Church has been a pillar of the community since its founding in 1884. The church has been an integral part of the neighborhood’s rebirth, primarily by bringing the community together through offerings like a weekly community breakfast, small group classes, an annual chili cook-off and a Palm Sunday egg hunt and picnic. There are other houses of worship nearby, including several Missionary Baptist churches.
