Gated community on the edge of Macon
First constructed in the 1970s, Lake Wildwood is the oldest gated community in Macon, Georgia. “We have 28 miles of roads within the community, so it’s massive,” says Rachel Godschild, the general manager of Lake Wildwood who also lives in the neighborhood. “It’s very big and welcoming and warming.” The area is home to 5,000 residents and 1,500 homes, all surrounded by a main gate with a guard and other gates that residents must use a transponder to access. The community has had 24-hour securityfor the past 20 or so years. “The security is one of the big features of the community,” Godschild says. She says many of the people moving into the Lake Wildwood are families. “It’s kind of like a starter community. It’s a close-knit community for kids.”
Outdoor recreation around Lake Wildwood
“The big draw would be the lake,” says Godschild. “It’s very scenic, and now’s a great time to be fishing, since it’s cool.” Lake Wildwood has over 180 acres and a section where jet skiing is allowed. The lake is stocked with fish such as catfish and bass. “I just got a small fishing boat,” says Godschild. “It’s exhilarating; when you get a bite it’s just fun.” Boat ramps surround the lake. After registering their boats, homeowners are free to use the water. “I would say 25% of homeowners have a boat,” says Godschild. “Everyone has something to get on the lake with.” There is also a small beach where swimming is permitted, and next to the clubhouse is an Olympic-sized swimming pool. Throughout the neighborhood are tennis courts and basketball courts, and an outdoor put-put golf green. “We have a lot of nature, walking trails, even deer,” says Godschild. “It’s very scenic.”
Lake Wildwood is in the heart of a private gated community.

Community events through the year, including steak nights
The homeowner's association hosts holiday events throughout the year, such as Trunk or Treat and a 4th of July celebration. “The biggest turnout is typically 4th of July. They set up a barge on the lake and shoot fireworks from there,” says Godschild. “The pool stays open late, and you can see the fireworks on the lake.” Dance classes occur every Sunday and book clubs throughout the month. The neighborhood also has a bimonthly steak night held at the clubhouse, with baked potatoes and steak from the grill. Locally owned and chain stores next to each other on Zebulon Road

Prices range from $129,000 to about $330,000. “The homes were built in stages,” says Godschild. “We do still have some new construction on land, the hidden jewels.” There are also a few plots of land still undeveloped within the community, ranging from $10,500 for 0.3 acres to $19,900 for 0.6 acres. Homes often have attached garages and fenced-in backyards. Houses that back up to the lake usually have a private dock or boat ramp.
