North Highlands Historic District
Neighborhood in Macon-Bibb, Georgia
Bibb CountyCraftsman bungalows and brick cottages in northeast Macon
A thick tree canopy blankets the neighborhood and sidewalks line the curving streets. Although the enclave was added in part to the National Register of Historic Places for its early 20th-century and revival-style homes — such as Colonial, Tudor, Greek and Georgian — these homes are rarely for sale. Instead, most available houses are renovated Craftsman bungalows, brick cottages or ranch-style homes that date back to the early 1900s. Buyers who don’t mind getting their hands dirty can buy fixer-uppers that cost between $50,000 and $100,000. Modest bungalows, cottages and ranch-style houses can range from $65,000 to $175,000. Larger renovated properties can cost between $135,000 and $250,000. Scarce Victorian or revival-style homes can range from $200,000 to $400,000.North Highlands Park and Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park
North Highlands Park received a major facelift in 2023. The 28-acre park had been abandoned in the ’70s, and kids often resorted to playing in the street. With the help of a $180,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia, city officials and the Historic Macon Foundation revamped the park with swings, a half basketball court, a walking and biking trail, and picnic tables. The park is now a common gathering place for neighbors to meet while letting the kids blow off steam. Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park is a natural gem in Macon located 2 miles south of the neighborhood. The prehistoric Native American site has been continuously occupied by humans for more than 12,000 years and is slated to become Georgia’s first National Park. Macon Coliseum is near the soon-to-be National Park and hosts concerts, live events and family shows like Disney on Ice. With Downtown Macon only a mile away, residents can enjoy live music nearly every night of the week. On Wednesday nights, music lovers go to Grant’s Lounge to hear Macon Music Revue perform hits by Macon legends like Otis Redding, Little Richard, and The Allman Brothers Band, along with deep cuts from the Capricorn Records catalog.Groceries less than a mile away at Kroger
Residents hardly have to leave the neighborhood for groceries with a Kroger less than a mile away at the southern edge of the neighborhood. Clusters of fast-food chains, discount stores and auto parts shops line Gray Highway, but some local restaurants are nearby. El Sombrero Mexican Restaurant is a casual spot for Mexican fare and margaritas inside the Kroger shopping plaza. Downtown Macon, located 1 mile across the river, has more than 50 restaurants including Sweet Eleanor’s, a coffee and dessert shop owned by a North Highlands neighbor. House-made craft beer, hand-cut fries and gourmet burgers are the specialties of Ocmulgee Brewpub, which offers indoor and outdoor seating.Only 1 mile to Downtown Macon
One of the reasons buyers choose the neighborhood is its proximity to Downtown Macon. Residents enjoy shaded suburban streets with easy access to the amenities the central business district has to offer. Piedmont Macon is the closest hospital, located 1.5 miles south. The neighborhood is close to Interstate 75, which connects to Atlanta, about 80 miles north, and I-16, which leads to Savannah, about 165 miles east. Macon Downtown Airport is 5 miles southeast.College credit at Northeast High School
Kids can attend Burdell-Hunt Elementary School, a magnet school for communicative arts, before heading to Appling Middle School. Teens can graduate from Northeast High School. All schools receive a C-minus from Niche. High schoolers can prep for college or their careers through the Hutchings College and Career Academy and earn up to 30 college credits while still in school. There are several private schools in Macon, too, including Mount de Sales Academy and St. Peter Claver Catholic School. “There are more magnet schools, and when we lived in North Highlands our kids went to a public magnet school," Whitley says.Regular events courtesy of the North Highlands Neighborhood Association
