Bibb County
Bungalows and Victorians built in the early 1900s
Primarily built between 1910 and 1940, the streets are mostly laid out in a grid pattern, going up and down small hills. Homes often sit close to each other, with small front yards and trees. Properties usually have driveways but may not have garages or carports. “The neighborhood wasn’t like a cookie cutter and built recently,” says Griffin. “They have beautiful mantels, beautiful bricks. They’re diamonds in the rough.” The area has a mixture of home styles, ranging from single-story Victorians to bungalows. “These little craftsman bungalows, they get a lot of attention from travel nurses and students at University of Mercer,” Griffin says. Prices for investment houses can range from $18,000 for one in need of a complete renovation to $91,000 for an occupied, two-unit property. Homes that have already been renovated can range from $126,000 to about $230,000. “The mayor started Blight Fight, where blighted buildings are torn down and the land sold at an auction,” says Griffin. “There was a huge influx of parcels.” Land prices can range from $9,000 to $18,000.Community center programs and Tattnall Square Park
Buck Melton Community Center provides services and programs, including partnering with the Boys and Girls Club of Central Georgia, Head Start, the Macon-Bibb County Sheriff’s Outreach and others. About a mile north of the neighborhood, Tattnall Square Park has a playground and a mixture of tennis and pickleball courts. The park also has several green spaces, alongside a pavilion with picnic tables. Just north of the park is Macon Dog Park. It has a small creek running through it, as well as separate areas for large and small dogs. Carolyn Crayton Park, recently renamed from Central City Park, was established in 1871 and has three separate playgrounds and pavilions. Additionally, Carolyn Crayton Park is the site of Central City Skatepark.Fine Arts and IB magnet high school for the district

The high school has a C-plus from Niche and has been an International Baccalaureate school since 1996. The Fine Arts program requires an audition for admission.Cherry blossoms and burger week hosted by the city
Macon’s International Cherry Blossom Festival features over 350,000 Yoshino cherry trees. The festival has a Cherry Blossom Trail, extending out from downtown to where some of the historic buildings can be viewed under the trees. Macon Burger Week typically occurs the first week of November. Downtown Macon restaurants participate, trying to create up a burger that wins The Cleverly Created Award and The Most Beef Sales Award. “They had a fried green tomato pimento burger one year. I don’t think it won, but it was up there,” Griffin says.Buses leading into downtown and a nearby hospital
The Macon-Bibb County Transit Authority operates three bus routes through the neighborhood: the 6, 7 and 9. Route 7 runs the most often, following Jeff Davies Street as it turns into Telfair Street. “The seniors especially take advantage of the bus routes,” says Austin. “But most people have vehicles.” Interstates 75 and 16 follow the Ocmulgee River through Macon. The neighborhood has plenty of sidewalks that stretch into downtown. Atrium Health Navicent Medical Center also is nearby.National stores within 5 miles, farmers market at Tattnall Square

National chains such as Kroger and Walmart Supercenter are within driving distance. “There are grocery stores around, but they are 5 to 6 miles away,” says Austin. “It would be nice to have more of a grocery presence in the area.” Every Thursday at Tattnall Square Park, Napier Heights Food Co-Op hosts a farmers' market. “Downtown Macon has transformed, there’s a lot of new restaurants and breweries,” says Austin. “The nightlife has really picked up over the last few years.” A variety of restaurants line downtown. Kudzu Seafood Company is home to The Wheelhouse Bar, open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Ocmulgee Brewpub has homemade brews. Smaller clothing boutiques also dot downtown.
