Side streets in the Vineville Historic District showcase well kept lawns and gardens.
A well-preserved 19th- and 20th-century suburb
In the heart of Macon, the Vineville Historic District is made up of a network of tree-lined streets and meticulously preserved homes dating back to the 1880s. Among its stately houses, one home stands out as a landmark for music lovers: the former residence of The Allman Brothers Band. “This is where the original band lived, the original six members,” says Bain Hamilton, marketing director for The Allman Brothers Band Museum. “It’s in the heart of the Vineville neighborhood. We always get people that make comments about the house and how beautiful it is and even the area, how cool it is with all the historic homes.” Nowadays, homebuyers choose the neighborhood for its quiet residential streets, charming architecture, sociable neighbors and proximity to Downtown Macon.

Romantic, remodeled turn-of-the-century homes
Shade trees dot the gently rolling terrain of the neighborhood, which sits on a plateau above the Ocmulgee River. The community has a grid-like street pattern lined with sidewalks and curbs, with the only exception being the oval-shaped Stanislaus Circle. Most homes were built between 1900 and 1930, but some date back to the 1880s. There are also plenty of homes constructed between the ’40s and ’50s. The neighborhood has a unique blend of architectural styles including Plantation Plain, Victorian, Neoclassical Revival, Tudor Revival, Craftsman bungalows and brick cottages. Fixer-uppers range between $100,000 and $200,000. Turn-key remodeled homes typically cost between $235,000 and $440,000. Sprawling homes that have been completely remodeled can range from $500,000 to $650,000.
Music came to the Vineville Historic District when the Allman Brothers Band arrived in 1970.
Big history at The Big House
The original members of the Allman Brothers Band called Vineville home during their formative years from 1970-1973. Linda Oakley, the wife of bassist Berry Oakley, saw the massive Tudor-style home for rent and dubbed it The Big House. The house now serves as an interactive museum dedicated to the band with more than a 250,000 artifacts. “There’s a lot of good memories and a lot of tragedy here with two of the founding members dying when they all lived at this house,” Hamilton says. “It’s a really special place and there’s no other museums like it.”
Oak Haven Park is a small urban park that has playground and exercise equipment in Vineville.
Community celebrations at Oak Haven Park
Over the past decade, Oak Haven Park has been transformed from 10 empty lots into a cherished community landmark. The park has ample green space for soccer and disk golf, as well as a playground and obstacle course. The community is also 4 miles west of Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park, a prehistoric Native American site set to become Georgia’s first National Park. The land has more than 12,000 years of history and is the ancestral home of the Muscogee Nation, who will co-manage the park with the National Park Service.
Many famous people are commemorated including the Vineville Historic District's Allman Brothers.
History and comfort food at H & H Restaurant
Although located outside the neighborhood, H & H Restaurant is intrinsically tied to Vineville. “Back when The Allman Brothers Band first started, they could only afford one plate of food, and they’d all go there and share it,” Hamilton says. “Mama Louise, one of the owners of the restaurant who started it, would see the band and feed them for free and they coined a pretty special relationship.” The soul food staple is known for its “meat and three” menu, biscuit sandwiches and fried okra. Many residents head to Ingleside Village for restaurants and retail shopping. Kroger has groceries covered about 4 miles northwest of the neighborhood.
