The New Jersey community of Madison Park sits within Old Bridge Township, which has earned a label from some locals due to the township’s location 4 miles from the beach and 10 miles from New York City. “We call it ‘the sweet spot’ because you can get to so many places from here,” says Christina Crupi-Lyons, a sales associate at Weichert Realtors’ Old Bridge office. Madison Park attracts people who want to live in a suburban environment but still have the country’s largest city to the north and the sandy boardwalks along Raritan Bay to the east. Madison Park itself is known for its friendly, active residents who delight the community’s children by going all out decorating houses for Halloween and celebrating the Fourth of July, Crupi-Lyons says. “People like that it’s vibrant in terms of the people living there.”

1950s subdivision in Middlesex County
U.S. Route 9 divides Madison Park’s housing stock, with single-family homes generally found west of the highway and apartments to the east. Most of Madison Park’s houses were built in the 1950s, when ranch homes were laid out along streets with scholarly names like Princeton Road and Amherst Court. Smaller subdivisions of colonial-style houses and duplexes were added in the ‘80s and ‘90s. The community’s median home price is around $510,000, higher than the national median but slightly lower than Middlesex County’s typical home price.

Unique name and ecosystem at Cheesequake State Park
East of the community, Cheesequake State Park’s landscape transitions between hardwood forests, pine barrens and marshes throughout the park’s 1,200 acres. This blend of ecosystems means hikers and kayakers can see a wide range of flora and fauna, including wildflowers, ospreys and bald eagles. “You can camp there and hold parties and barbecues,” says Crupi-Lyons. When snow falls in the winter, one of the park’s hills becomes a sledding spot. There are competing theories behind the park’s strange name. Some believe it’s because the park’s bogs shake due to their cheese-like softness, while others say it was named by the Lenni Lenape tribe, the region’s original inhabitants. Within Madison Park itself, there are a pair of neighborhood parks. Surrounded by homes, these grass fields feature basketball courts, playgrounds and shaded benches. South of Madison Park, Old Bridge Township has a few community centers where sports leagues and other events serve as ways for residents to meet each other, Crupi-Lyons says.
