Antler’s Tavern has seen it all
According to local history, Homer V. Simpson won half of Antler’s Tavern in a poker game in the 1940s. He also made a sizable donation to the city of Madison, and the city named a neighborhood road, Simpson Street, after him. The area became known as the Broadway-Simpson neighborhood. “It became a mix of single-family homes built in the 1950s and 60s as well as a significant amount of relatively large multi-family homes and high-density apartments,” says Ben Anton, broker associate at the Lauer Realty Group.
Despite a struggle with crime in the 1990s, and the city's subsequent efforts to rebrand the neighborhood by changing its name to Bridge-Lakepoint and changing Simpson Street to Lake Point Drive, longtime residents still celebrate the community that was forged during those years, hosting reunions to maintain the area’s history and spirit. A petition was started to change Lake Point Drive back to Simpson Street. Those efforts now mix with economic investment from outside the neighborhood. “We’ve seen just more development and redevelopment happening,” says Josh Lavik, a real estate agent who runs Josh Lavik & Associates, a part of EXP Realty.
Access to Beltline Highway and bus routes
Although Madison's Beltline Highway is blocks away and accessible via Broadway, there aren't many ways into Bridge-Lakepoint. “There’s two roads in on the east and no roads in on the west,” Anton says. Accessing downtown, 4 miles away, requires hopping on the Beltline for a single exit. Broadway, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare, runs east into the city of Monona. Bus routes for the Madison Metro run along Bridge Road and Broadway. The Dane County Regional Airport is about 14 miles north of the neighborhood. The Wisconsin Health University hospital is about 7 miles away in case of an emergency.
Off-Broadway Draft House among newer dining options
Madison’s redevelopment efforts have resulted in some newer dining options nearby. “Significant development along that channel which has brought both money and attention to the neighborhood,” Anton says. Waypoint Public House along the Yahara River is one such spot, as is Buck & Honey’s. Another newer spot is Off Broadway Drafthouse, which honors the area’s history with murals from the Wisconsin Historical Society inside the bar. Metro Market in Monona is a nearby grocery option. South Towne Mall is just across Broadway from the neighborhood and a Walmart Supercenter lives just over the Beltline to the south. And Antler’s Tavern, the same as it ever was, is still open on Broadway.
Off Broadway serves rotating craft beers and American fare in a low-key atmosphere.
Buck and Honey's is a family-friendly restaurant well-known for its specialty cocktails.

Modest homes and condos along Lake Point Drive and Bridge Road
While Bridge-Lakepoint does have some single-family homes along Lake Point Drive, much of the neighborhood’s residential properties are condos or small apartment buildings. “In the early 2000s, several of those older multi-unit apartment buildings were bought by the city and razed, after which they added a lot of condominiums and owner-occupied opportunities along Broadway between South Towne Mall and Bridge Road,” Anton says. While the neighborhood's reputation suffered in the 1990s, it now holds a CAP Index crime score of 4 out of 10, the same as the national average. Most condos range from $200,000 to $250,000, though those closer to the lake can cost around $350,000. Single-family homes have estimated values between $300,000 and $375,000.
